History of the Liberec Botanical Garden
The Liberec Botanical Garden is the oldest botanical garden in the Czech Republic. It was founded in 1876 by the Nature Friends Club, which purchased land on Masaryk Chaussée for planting bushes and trees and sowing plants for the town's parks. In 1884, a greenhouse was built on the site. However, in 1893, the land had to be cleared for the construction of a new museum building, so the garden was moved to its current location at the former military hospital. The new garden opened to the public on September 5, 1895.
At first, the garden served as a supply center of greenery for the town, rather than an educational institution. During the First World War, the garden was mostly used for growing vegetables. In 1925, the first large greenhouse was built, which was used to exhibit tropical plants.
In 1954, the town administration decided to completely change the purpose of the garden from a gardening place to a cultural and educational institution. The North Bohemia Botanical Garden was founded, led by Pavel Smrž. The garden began exchanging plant seeds with other botanical gardens in Europe and overseas. By 1960, two more greenhouses and a freshwater aquarium, the largest in Czechoslovakia at the time, had been built.
Today, the Liberec Botanical Garden is one of the most important botanical gardens in the Czech Republic. It covers an area of 3.5 hectares and is home to over 10,000 plant species, including rare and endangered species.
The main areas
The pavilions of the botanical garden are arranged in a somewhat symbolic shape: they seem to form a flower with ten petals. The pavilion's center is room B, which houses the local aquarium with plants and inhabitants of the seas and freshwater rivers and lakes. Pavilion B is accessed through a small glass tunnel with water.

You can walk through the pavilions in alphabetical order. In addition to the central room B, with its display of plants from Madagascar and Africa, you will pass through the following halls:
- Pavilion A, which features extensive collections of succulents and cacti from all corners of the earth;
- Pavilion C, where the most diverse representatives of the flora of the Australian continent are gathered;
- Pavilion D is one of the most interesting in the botanical garden. Here, there is a rich collection of carnivorous plants. Some of them are on the verge of extinction, but specialists working here are actively engaged in their cultivating;
- Pavilion E is a real tropical jungle, where you will meet exotic plants with bright large flowers, hibiscus, ficus, banana trees, and intertwined vines, as well as see with your own eyes the legendary lily Victoria Amazonian with huge leaves and many other representatives of flora;
- Pavilion G contains the inhabitants of equatorial Africa;
- Pavilion F is a gallery of cacti with an extensive collection of prickly plants;
a dense forest with abundant ferns, trees covered with moss, and horsetails is Pavilion H. Here, you and your child will feel yourself in a natural primitive forest. Quiet music plays in the hall and a small waterfall rustles with water. In other words, you can feel a complete immersion in the theme of prehistoric forest; - Pavilion I is a main decoration of the Liberec Botanical Garden. It contains a wide variety of dwarf plants and flowering shrubs. It also has a small pond in which carp Koi live. The pond is decorated in an oriental style.
