History of Znojmo Underground

The origins of Znojmo Underground date back to the medieval period, specifically the 14th century. Initially developed for defensive purposes, these passageways and cellars were crucial in the town's fortification system. The construction began by connecting individual cellars beneath houses and palaces, gradually expanding into an elaborate labyrinth by the 15th century.

Defensive Uses

The primary purpose of the Znojmo Catacombs was to protect the city's inhabitants against invading forces. The passageways were ingeniously designed to include various defensive measures. For instance, some corridors led under the fortifications and out of the city, allowing hidden inhabitants to escape and search for food during sieges.

The catacombs were ventilated by air shafts, and fireplaces in the cellars were connected to house chimneys. This setup allowed smoke to emanate from seemingly empty houses, making the town appear deserted to enemies.

If invaders managed to find an entrance to the cellars, they would encounter several obstacles, including slippery slides that dropped them into deep wells, trapdoors, and narrow passageways that were difficult to navigate. These defensive features made the catacombs an effective refuge during times of conflict.

Water enthusiasts should visit Swimming Pool Louka, which is just 2 kilometres away.

Structure and Layout

The labyrinth of Znojmo Underground is a complex network of passageways and cellars spread across multiple levels, each serving different purposes. The upper levels were primarily used for storage and residential purposes, while the lower levels housed water supply systems, including wells and drainage channels. Notable features include prison cells, a wine cellar, and even a torture room, offering a glimpse into the town's medieval past.
