History of Prinz Georg Garten

Prinz-Georg-Garten has a fascinating history that dates back to the 18th century. The garden was created from two separate gardens: the garden of Landgraf Ernst Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt (1667-1739) with a small palace and the adjacent garden of Lieutenant General Rudolf von Pretlack (1668-1737) with a charming, colorfully painted garden house.

In 1764, Landgraf Ludwig VIII. (1691-1768) gifted the combined garden to his second-born favorite son, Prince Georg Wilhelm (1722-1782). The garden was then developed under the influence of French garden art, with elements such as an orangery garden, water basin, hedge theater, bosquets, and sundials.

The geometric and formal order of Prinz-Georg-Garten reflects the French influence on garden design in the 18th century. The merging of the two gardens is still visible in the distinctive layout and the two main axes that intersect at right angles. This combination also uniquely connected the ornamental and kitchen gardens, with flower beds framed by boxwood hedges alternating with fruit trees, herbs, and vegetables.

Over time, the garden served as an intimate refuge for Prince Georg Wilhelm and his family, where they could retreat from official obligations and court etiquette to enjoy carefree pastimes and informal festivities. However, after the death of Georg Wilhelm's daughter, Luise, Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1761-1829), the close connection between the Darmstadt princely family and the garden came to an end.

The garden later served as the seat of the Grand Ducal Garden Directorate, a commercial nursery, and was partially leased as farmland, causing it to lose its original character. Since 1947, the Prinz-Georg-Garten has been under the care of the Hessian Palace Administration, which has reconstructed it based on extensive research, restoring it to its former glory.
