The Opel Zoo was opened in the last century thanks to Georg von Opel, grandson of the founder of the world-famous car brand. This momentous event took place in 1956, and today there is even a monument to the "father" of the zoo on the grounds of the animal park.
So, if you and your child love getting to know animals in every new city, every new country, the Opel Zoo is the place to be on your cultural itinerary. The zoo is home to around a thousand modern animals: fish, birds and, of course, all kinds of animals.
The location of the Opel Zoo is perfect: in the picturesque, well-tended green valley of the Taunus. The zoo itself is divided into three large themed areas: Africa, Europe and Asia. Each zone has one animal from each continent.
The Asian section, for example, is home to the unique Mesopotamian deer, which are a particular pride of place. Only here do these amazing animals live and breed, while in the rest of the world they simply do not exist. Giraffes and elephants are also characteristic of the African section.
The Opel Zoo is a unique place. Animals and birds are rarely separated from people and live in their natural environment. Visitors to the zoo can not only admire them, but also learn useful and interesting information from the staff about the peculiarities of keeping and breeding animals.
Some of the animals are not only available to feed but also to pet. Cows, donkeys, goats, sheep and lambs are all welcome. But be careful around the enclosure of the local hippopotamus. This mischievous creature is known to emerge unexpectedly and shower onlookers with cool, invigorating water. Some of the local delicacies will happily take a sweet, crunchy carrot from your hand, sold at a special kiosk just outside the entrance.
The Opel Zoo's well-kept and well-maintained grounds are not only a place to meet the animals, but also to enjoy a relaxing family holiday. There are plenty of walking trails, barbecue areas and children's play areas with swings, slides and roundabouts. Children can pay to ride a camel or pony. Dogs are allowed for a fee (€2).
