History of Fulda Cathedral

Fulda Cathedral stands on the site of the former Ratgar Basilica, which dates back to the 8th century. The Ratgar Basilica was once the largest north of the Alps and served as the burial site of Saint Boniface and the church of Fulda Abbey.

In 1700, plans for a new church were drawn up by renowned German Baroque architect Johann Dientzenhofer, who was commissioned by Prince-Abbot Adalbert von Schleifras on the recommendation of the Pope after Dientzenhofer's study trip to Rome in 1699. The deliberate similarity of the church's internal arrangement to that of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome is testimony to Dientzenhofer's visit.

Construction on the new Baroque structure began on April 23, 1704, using in part the foundations of the earlier Ratgar Basilica. The shell was completed in 1707, the roof in 1708, and the interior in 1712. The new abbey church was dedicated on August 15, 1712, with the dedication tablet placed on the facade by von Schleifras giving the dedication as "Christus Salvator".

Like its predecessor, the new Baroque building served as the abbey church and the burial shrine of Saint Boniface. In 1752, it was elevated to a cathedral when the Diocese of Fulda was created. In 1802, Fulda Abbey was dissolved, but the cathedral continued in operation as the seat of the Bishops of Fulda.

Despite facing challenges such as a fire in 1905 that destroyed the righthand tower and bells and air raid bombings during World War II, the cathedral has been meticulously restored and remains an essential landmark in Fulda. After damage caused by the air raids, the cathedral was closed for restoration until 1954.

Fulda City Palace is located 300 meters from the Cathedral. Visit it also with the whole family.

The cathedral's exterior, with its twin towers, sandstone sculptures, and ornate portal door, is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Visitors can admire the intricate frescoes, stucco figures, and the medieval musical apparatus known as the Golden Wheel. The cathedral's unusual westward orientation and decorative obelisks add to its charm.

Significance and Symbolism

Fulda Cathedral holds great religious and cultural significance, having been a pilgrimage site for centuries. The cathedral's architecture and artwork are rich in symbolism, with the dome representing the Holy Spirit and the sculptures of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael guarding the high altar.
