Mount Montjuic is a must for any sightseeing tour of Barcelona. If you have little time to see the sights of the Catalan capital, Montjuic is worth a visit: if only for the beautiful view of the whole city. But if you are travelling with children and will stay in Barcelona for a few days, we recommend a whole day to visit Montjuic. There will be entertainment for children of all ages and with different interests.
This mountain in Barcelona is only 173 meters high, but it is not necessary to climb to its top on foot. Much more fun for children is the ride on the funicular or in the cable car cabin (unless the kids are afraid of heights). Usually, Montjuic sightseeing begins with an excursion to the fortress, built in the 17th century. Weapon lovers can visit the Military Museum in the fortress, and a rare boy will not hold his breath at the sight of a whole army of tin soldiers. For the rest, we recommend looking at the city from the height of the fortress bastions. From there, the Sagrada Familia's steeples and the port's multi-storey liners are clearly visible.
Children are impressed by the Spanish Village. Its streets are lined with replicas of famous Spanish buildings. Sometimes they are scaled-down copies, and sometimes they are life-size. A walk around the mini-country can take hours, especially as kids eagerly join in with pottery or weaving workshops.
For a quiet stroll, the alleys of the Botanical Gardens are great. The garden's beauty is that it is decorated at all times of the year with blooming Mediterranean plants — other parks and gardens in Montjuïc, including the Cactus Garden.
Museums located on the mountain include the Ethnographic Museum, Archaeological Museum, and National Museum of Art of Catalonia (MNAC), housed in the National Palace. It displays works by Catalan sculptors and artists from the Middle Ages to the present day. In the evening, visitors flock to the square in front of the Palau Nacional in anticipation of the Magic Fountain show. The water dances to different music, but the iconic even for tourists is the composition 'Barcelona' performed by Freddie Mercury and Monserrat Caballé.
Monjuïc Park is one of Barcelona's most significant city parks. If you're travelling with a baby, bring a pram. You can rent bikes from the park if you're here with older children. A tour bus rides up the mountain from Plaça Espanya Square and takes you around all the sights of Montjuïc.
