Park Ciutadella

Park Ciutadella

Spain, Barcelona

There is nothing Catalans value more than their independence. This is why Barcelona demolished the Citadella fortress as soon as possible, a reminder of the city's lost fight for freedom, and created a park in its place. Today, Ciutadella Park is a beautiful place to take your children for a walk.

However, one fortified structure remains. It's the armoury where the Catalonian Parliament now sits. The former military square is now covered in orange trees, and there's a small pond in front of it.

But during its existence, Citadel Park (Parc de la Ciutadella) acquired other structures. For example, the Arc de Triomphe, which was built for the World Exhibition of 1888, the Castle of the Three Dragons, and the amazing Cascade Fountain. Antonio Gaudi, then a novice architect, took part in the development of the composition of the fountain. And the Castle of the Three Dragons is the result of the work of another famous Barcelona resident, Domènech y Montaner. Now the castle houses the Zoological Museum. The spacious park area also houses the oldest Museum of Geology in Barcelona.

Visit the Barcelona Zoo — it is also located on the territory of Ciutadella Park. Otherwise, this is just an excellent recreational area, with three wide main alleys (elm, linden and poplar) and many small paths with benches under the canopy of trees. On the large lake in the centre of the park, you can ride a boat or feed seagulls and turtles from the shore. And exhibitions and concerts are often held in the Ciutadella Park in Barcelona.
