Walking in Madrid with children, you will surely notice glass towers with a large inscription Reina Sofia in the centre. Hidden behind the towers is an old building that houses a unique collection of contemporary art. Children are believed to easily and positively perceive modernist painting — try to check this by visiting the Reina Sofia Art Center. We recommend coming here with schoolchildren: you won’t have to invent a way to keep your child in front of a picturesque masterpiece.
Pablo Picasso's Guernica is the most critical work in the collection of the Museo Reina Sofia. But works by other avant-garde artists such as Dali, Grice, Miró, Bacon and Moore can also be seen in the halls. Overall, the museum's collection includes 20,000 works.
It should be noted that the permanent exhibition occupies only one museum floor. The other floors and the new building on Ronda de Atocha are allocated for temporary exhibitions. Some of the works, mainly sculptures and installations, are placed outdoors. You can let your child's imagination run wild here and listen to them explain, for example, Joan Miró's sculpture "Moonbird".
The Museo Reina Sofia is also housed in the Crystal Palace and Palacio Velazquez in Retiro Park. And nearby are Madrid's other famous art museums, the Prado and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Gallery. Note that the museum halls are kept at a constant temperature of +21°C. Bringing a jumper for a child might be a good idea.
