Drach Caves

Drach Caves

Spain, Porto Cristo

Mysterious caves beckon and frightening at the same time. What can we say about the underground labyrinth, which has the name "Dragon's Cave" (Cuevas del Drach)? It immediately sounds like a fairy tale, albeit a little scary. This cave in Mallorca has its legend as if once a mythical winged serpent guarded the entrance. But today, the dragon does not live there, and the light is always on in the dark cave. Take the child by the hand and step with him under the arch of one of the most amazing dungeons in the world.

The Dragon Cave in Mallorca was discovered in the Middle Ages. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was decided to open it for tourists, for which a route of just over 1 km was laid. The light was brought into the cave, and not just the road electrified, but artistic lighting was arranged, emphasizing the natural relief. The lighting project was designed by Carlos Buigas, whose famous works include the Magic Fountains in Barcelona.

The underground landscapes are magnificent. In some places, streaks and layers form drawings, thanks to which certain cave parts got their names: Flag, Organ Hall, Lost City ... What associations will stalactites hanging from the ceiling or stalagmites growing upwards cause in a child? Let the kids dream up, and this excursion in Mallorca will be a memorable experience for them.

The depth of the dragon cave is 25 meters. And when everyone descends to the maximum depth, and the first enthusiasm subsides a little, a new miracle awaits you. From somewhere, a light will dawn, reminiscent of the sunrise, and music will sound. The light will flare up — and you will see a huge underground lake in front of you and a boat floating on it, where musicians are sitting. The cave's acoustics are created for music, and therefore the impression of the concert remains very strong. Finally, sightseers can take a boat ride on Lake Martel, which is 170 meters long.

An essential requirement for entering the cave is comfortable shoes with non-slip soles. But you don't need to take care of warm clothes since Cuevas del Drach's air temperature is at +21°C. We recommend choosing to visit in the morning or evening hours when not so many people want to go on an excursion. Note that the group underground is accompanied by a guide, whose duties include only security. Brief information about the cave can be gleaned from the brochure issued at the box office.
