This excursion to Tenerife needs no preface — which children refuse to travel in a submarine in the Atlantic Ocean? That may be a sceptical attitude among adults who have dived into the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt. But the fact itself is essential for a child: a real submarine, a real ocean, a real dive to the depths. Such an underwater safari in Tenerife is arranged in the yacht port of San Miguel in the south of the island.
The Submarines Safari is explicitly built for underwater tourism. The spacious cabin, which maintains a comfortable pressure, temperature and humidity, can accommodate 48 people. Each person sits in a chair next to a large porthole (located in the underwater part of the boat, so they are not visible from the shore). There are even more giant portholes at either end of the submarine. There are screens next to each seat that display images from the boat's external video cameras and a scoreboard showing the depth and temperature of the water overboard.
When everyone is seated, the 100-tonne giant will begin its plunge. It will plunge to a depth of about 30 metres and go away from the shore into the fish kingdom. A guide accompanies the Submarine Safari boat tours. True, he only speaks Spanish. Without any explanation, one can see how the light changes overboard and how flocks of silvery fish suddenly swim up to the same porthole. Posters in the cabin help you identify the underwater world. In addition to the fish, you'll also see divers swimming with giant stingrays.
Note: excursion submarines have been operating in Tenerife since 1997 and are safe for the whole family. In addition, the submarine rarely causes symptoms of seasickness. The Port of San Miguel has a children's club where a child can learn about the principles of submarines and build a model submarine.
Important: Children under two are not allowed on the tour.
