History of Grovewood Village

Grovewood Village has a storied past, beginning as the home of Biltmore Industries. Founded by Edith Vanderbilt in the early 1900s, Biltmore Industries focused on producing high-quality homespun fabric. The industries were initially part of the Biltmore Estate, but in 1917, Fred Seely, the son-in-law of the Omni Grove Park Inn's founder, moved the operations to the current site adjacent to the inn. This relocation marked the beginning of a new chapter for the industries. Fred Seely's vision transformed Biltmore Industries into a bustling craft enterprise. By the 1930s, it had become the largest producer of handwoven wool in the world.

The complex included six cottages built between 1917 and 1924, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These buildings housed the weaving and woodworking operations, where artisans created exquisite textiles and furniture. The decline of the weaving industry in the mid-20th century led to a transformation of the site. Instead of letting the rich heritage fade, the owners repurposed the buildings to create an arts and crafts destination.

Today, Grovewood Village pays homage to its historical roots while embracing contemporary creativity. The site now includes the Grovewood Gallery, the Estes-Winn Antique Car Museum, the Biltmore Industries Homespun Museum, and working artist studios.
