The Latta Plantation Nature Preserve opened in 1981 and was officially designated a nature preserve in 1997. Originally a cotton plantation owned by Scots-Irish immigrant James Latta in the 1800s, the site has evolved into a protected area that safeguards various natural communities. Paddling enthusiasts can take advantage of the ADA-accessible ramp for easy entry into the water. Fishing is another popular activity, with numerous opportunities available along the lake and at the fishing dock. Anglers can expect to catch species such as largemouth bass, channel catfish, and blue catfish, but must have a North Carolina Inland Fishing License if they are 16 or older.The preserve also features several picnic shelters and an outdoor amphitheater, making it an ideal spot for family outings and gatherings. Picnic areas are available on a first-come, first-served basis, while larger shelters can be reserved in advance. Restrooms and a sand volleyball court are conveniently located nearby.
