History and Background
The North Carolina Museum of History was established to preserve and showcase the state's rich heritage. Its origins date back to the late 19th century when Frederick Augustus Olds, known as the "father" of the museum, began collecting items from across North Carolina. Olds traversed all 100 counties, gathering not only artifacts but also the stories associated with them. This storytelling philosophy remains a cornerstone of the museum today.
On December 5, 1902, Olds merged his private collection with the State Museum's collection, creating what was initially known as the "Hall of History." This collection, which included items as varied as a studded shoe buckle owned by James Iredell and the death mask of Confederate General Robert Hoke, was opened to the public in 37 cases.
In 1914, the North Carolina Historical Commission took over the Hall of History and moved it to the Ruffin Building on Union Square. However, the collection quickly outgrew this space and was relocated in 1939 to the Education Building, explicitly designed to accommodate both artifacts and exhibits. With continued growth, the Hall of History was renamed the North Carolina Museum of History on July 1, 1965, and moved to the Archives and History/State Library Building in 1968.
The State of North Carolina broke ground on a new, dedicated museum building in June 16, 1988. Completed in 1994 at a cost of over $29 million, the new building at 5 East Edenton Street features a research library, classrooms, a 315-seat auditorium, a design shop, conservation labs, artifact storage space, offices, the Museum Shop, and 55,000 square feet of exhibit space on four floors.
The museum is an affiliate through the Smithsonian Affiliations program, ensuring high-quality exhibits and educational programs. Key milestones include the opening of the "Story of North Carolina" exhibit and recent renovations funded by the North Carolina General Assembly and Gov. Roy Cooper.
Its support network includes the North Carolina Museum of History Associates and the North Carolina Museum of History Foundation, which raise funds for exhibitions, educational programming, artifact acquisition, and object conservation.
