Camp Onaway

Camp Onaway

United States, Hebron

Overview

Steeped in a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century, Camp Onaway has been inspiring young girls to embrace nature and explore their strengths. Founded in 1911 by Mrs. Henry (Mabel Woodbridge) Hollister, the camp today remains a vibrant testament to her pioneering spirit. The name 'Onaway' finds its roots in Longfellow's poetic masterpiece, The Song of Hiawatha, mirroring Hollister's vision of awakening a deep connection with nature and spirituality in young girls. Camp Onaway's narrative is deeply intertwined with the evolution of women's role in the 20th century. Hollister, a strong advocate for women empowerment, envisioned the camp as a space to prepare girls to assert their beliefs and recognize their strengths. This vision was carried forward by Frances M. Frost and Margaret F. Stiles, navigating the camp through World War II and the socio-cultural transformations of the 1950s and 60s. Today, the camp stands as a non-profit educational trust, its torch carried forward by dedicated parents and alumnae who serve on the Board of Trustees. In 2011, nearly 500 alumnae, family, and friends gathered to celebrate the camp's 100th anniversary, a testament to the enduring legacy of Camp Onaway. With a focus on leadership, hiking, and assorted adventures, Camp Onaway offers an enriching experience for young girls, shaping them into confident, nature-loving, and spiritually aware individuals. The camp's story is a testament to the power of a vision that stands the test of time, inspiring generations of young women to discover their potentials and embrace their strengths.
