Overview
The Duke University Youth Programs: Video Production Camp for Middle School offers an exciting opportunity for budding filmmakers in grades 6–8 to explore the art and technical skills of video production. This dynamic camp focuses on creating lively music videos while teaching the fundamentals of filmmaking in a hands-on, collaborative environment.
Campers are divided into production groups and guided through every stage of the filmmaking process—pre-production, production, and post-production. They’ll learn essential skills such as digital camera operation, composition and framing, sound design, lighting, exposure, and editing using Final Cut Studio in Duke’s computer labs. Special emphasis is placed on teamwork and group collaboration as students work together to bring their creative visions to life.
The program also includes enriching experiences beyond the classroom. Guest speakers from Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies and Arts of the Moving Image provide expert insights into storytelling and technical concepts. A field trip to Shadowbox Studio in Durham offers campers the chance to practice field production skills with professional equipment. The camp culminates in an end-of-program screening at a local venue, where participants showcase their music videos to peers, staff, and family.
With a mix of creativity, technical learning, and fun, this camp caters to all skill levels—whether your child is new to video production or has prior experience. Each camper leaves with a hard drive containing all their work for future experimentation and growth.
For middle schoolers passionate about storytelling through video, this camp is an incredible way to dive into filmmaking while building confidence, teamwork skills, and a portfolio of creative work. It’s an unforgettable summer experience that combines education with artistic expression.
