This camp offers students in grades 7–12 a comprehensive and immersive experience that combines music education, performance, and cultural enrichment. What Makes This Camp Special? The Jazz Arts Summer Music Camp is designed to connect students with the rich history and vibrant future of jazz. With a curriculum that emphasizes hands-on learning and collaboration, campers will: Perform in Small Combos: Students practice and perform in small groups, developing teamwork and musicianship. Learn Jazz Improvisation: Campers explore the art of improvisation, a cornerstone of jazz, guided by expert instructors. Dive into Jazz History: Through listening sessions and discussions, participants gain a deeper understanding of jazz’s cultural significance and evolution.
Master Their Instruments: Daily master classes are offered for instruments including bass, drums, guitar, piano, saxophone (and other woodwinds), trombone, trumpet, and even vocals. Special Guest Clinician – Marcus Strickland This year’s camp features saxophonist Marcus Strickland as the special guest clinician. A Grammy-nominated artist with extensive experience performing alongside legends like Roy Haynes and Robert Glasper, Strickland brings invaluable insights into the intersection of jazz, soul, and hip-hop. His presence adds an inspiring layer to the camp experience. Who Can Attend? The camp is open to students with at least one year of experience in a school band or private lessons. Participants are grouped by skill level (from beginner to advanced) after placement auditions to ensure they receive instruction tailored to their abilities.
