Program Highlights This dynamic program provides students with a comprehensive introduction to medical science through engaging activities and expert-led sessions: Simulated Patient Cases: Collaborate with peers to diagnose and treat a simulated patient, applying microbiological and biochemical tests. Pig Heart Dissection: Explore heart anatomy and function through a hands-on dissection, gaining a deeper understanding of cardiovascular health. Debate Treatment Options: Engage in critical thinking and teamwork as you discuss potential treatments and navigate the patient-doctor relationship. Workshops and Labs: Participate in didactic workshops and laboratory activities focused on microbiology, biochemistry, and anatomy. Equity in Medicine: Learn about the importance of diversity and equity in healthcare. Daily Schedule Students will follow a structured yet exciting schedule that balances academic rigor with free time: Morning: Breakfast followed by simulated patient casework. Afternoon: Labs, debates on treatment options, and interactive workshops. Evening: Free time for socializing or exploring campus life. Lights Out: 11 PM to ensure students are well-rested for the next day. Program Details Dates: June 16 – June 21, 2024 Cost: $1,630 (includes lodging, meals, course materials, activities, and excursions) Prerequisites: Completion of Biology + Chemistry or Physics Eligibility: Open to rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors Location: UNC Asheville campus A $500 deposit is required upon registration, with the remaining balance due by May 1, 2024. Enrollment is open until spaces are filled. Living on Campus Participants will stay in double-occupancy suites within air-conditioned residence halls. Meals are provided at the campus dining hall, offering students a taste of university life. This residential experience fosters independence while building camaraderie among like-minded peers.
