Caves in Saalbach - Hinterglemm

Not far from the town of Hallein, near Salzburg, are salt mines. The Dürnberg Mines, as they are called, are always full of curious tourists from all over the world. Salt has been mined here for a long time — the "white gold" that makes all food so delicious.

The Berchtesgaden salt mine began operations in the mid-16th century. At first, the work was done by hand — huge sacks of salt were carried out of the mine on carts. At the beginning of the 19th century, the work of a salt miner was mechanised — the first wooden pipeline was used.
