If you are travelling with your child by car, you should definitely visit Graz, a quiet and well-kept city in Austria. Despite its relatively small size, Graz has a large number of interesting sights. The city also has plenty of activities for children.
One of the most curious places to visit with a child is the Frida and Fred Children's Museum. Located in the green and beautiful Augarten park, it opened its doors to young visitors in 2003.
What makes the Frida & Fred Museum so unique? Because children can take part in all the activities. The museum offers them unusual exhibitions with a different theme each year, as well as original theatre productions.
The museum staff prepare themed exhibitions together with their young guests. These exhibitions allow visitors to learn about history through contact with the objects. It is a unique opportunity to be a part of history. Even the most complex things are made accessible to a child's understanding, as there are sounds, touches and smells in all the activities.
In 2012, for example, a very interesting experiment took place within the walls of the museum. A children's medical laboratory was set up where young visitors could get to know their own bodies. A large number of anatomical models were used to demonstrate how internal organs and systems work and how a person's appearance can change due to illness, ageing or addiction. The children were able to take part in one of the fascinating studies or become a doctor's assistant during an operation.
Many regular visitors still can't forget the exhibition 'Blub, Blub, Blub' that was held here in 2010-2011. It taught visitors the most curious facts about water. In 2013, the museum had two exhibitions: one on architecture for ages 8 and up, and one on the diversity of animal and human life for ages 3-7.
Take your curious young traveller to the Frida & Fred Museum. They'll enjoy seeing new things and phenomena in action. The museum will help your child to learn more about the world around them and how complex the different processes are and how many of them there are. The atmosphere in the institution is very welcoming, almost homely, so that children are no longer shy as soon as they cross the threshold. At Frida and Fred, your child can bake a loaf of bread, make an engraving or work as a bricklayer. In other words, they can try their hand at one of the trades. The most successful creations are displayed at local exhibitions.
Recently, with the help of the Klaus Tscher Foundation, the exhibition "Food, Glorious Food" was opened within the walls of the museum. This is an interactive exhibition about food and nutrition for young gourmets from the age of eight. What do you really like to eat? What happens when you prepare food? How far is food transported? And what do other people eat? Come to Frida & Fred's kitchen and find out all about food. Take part in a digestive dance, jump around like popcorn in a pot, catch slices of toast and learn that food is everywhere you look!
To find out which exhibition is on at the Frida and Freda Museum during your holiday in Austria, you can look at the poster on the home page of the official website. There's also a short video with some useful information to familiarise you with the museum's programme and exhibits.
If your child gets a little tired from all this new knowledge, offer him or her a break. The easiest place to do this is in the museum's playground. In this children's recreation area, your child can bounce around to his or her heart's content, go down the soft slide and play with other children. At the end of the tour, make sure you and your child take home a souvenir, toy or book from the many items on sale in the gift shop.
