Minor Theatre

Czech Republic, Prague

Nestled in a passage across from the imposing New Town City Hall Tower, Divadlo Minor is a whimsical theater that caters to the watchful eyes and ears of children, making it an ideal destination for families visiting Prague. What a wonder: a theater curtain is painted on the wall of the house, from behind which a mischievous puppet's face peeks out! The puppets of the Minor Children's Theater in Prague are no less interested in the visitors than the visitors are in the puppets; that is why they look out into the street.

The history of Minor began in 1950 when the Central Puppet Theater began operating in Prague. Since then, dozens of performances have been staged here, which are understandable to children of any age, even without knowledge of Czech. Actors and marionette puppets coexist on stage, and the audience empathizes with the play's characters, rejoices and grieves with them. The beautiful music, unusual scenery, and shadow theater evoke emotions.

Here's why a visit to Divadlo Minor with children is an enchanting and memorable experience:

  • Interactive Shows and Entertainment. The program at Divadlo Minor includes interactive shows designed for kids older than 4 years old and adults. The theater collaborates closely with students from the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theater, ensuring that the performances are not only entertaining but also engaging for young audiences. The shows often feature actors, puppets, and interactive elements that captivate the imagination of children and adults alike.
  • Family-Friendly Entertainment. Divadlo Minor strives to entertain parents and adults while primarily focusing on captivating the hearts and minds of little ones. The theater's commitment to creating a family-friendly environment makes it an entertainment complex for all, ensuring that both children and adults can immerse themselves in the enchanting world of theater and storytelling.
  • Cultural Enrichment for Children. A visit to Divadlo Minor offers children the opportunity to experience the magic of live performances, fostering an early appreciation for the arts and cultural expression. The whimsical and imaginative nature of the shows at Divadlo Minor can spark creativity and curiosity in young minds, making it an enriching experience for children visiting Prague.
  • Hidden Gem for Family Entertainment. Divadlo Minor is a hidden gem in Prague, offering a blend of traditional and modern storytelling that appeals to both children and adults. The theater's dedication to re-telling classic stories with a modern twist ensures that families can enjoy a unique and captivating theatrical experience during their visit to Prague.

Try to visit this fantastic theater with your child. Miracles here begin at the entrance. Birds are sitting on the staircase railing; a piglet is sticking out of the window where the cashier usually sits, and enchanted trees are taking root in the main foyer. What to speak of the stage, on the curtain of which a blackboard and a paper airplane are painted? The seats are arranged so the whole stage can be seen in the palm of your hand.

The repertoire of the Minor Theater is extensive, and the titles of the plays sound very intriguing. If, say, fairy tales about Robin Hood are familiar to children, then plays with the title "The Tale of Brunswick and the Lion" or "The Prince on the White Horse" are worth seeing — they smell of miracles. During the Christmas holidays, the Minor is staging a production about the birth of the baby Jesus.

Just 500 meters from the theater are two entertainment centers: Laser Arena Praha and Prague Golf & Games

An exceptional performance is prepared for children from 2 years old. It is called "The Big Beet" and is intended for the youngest theatergoers. It is a famous fairy tale about the Big Beet for the most minor spectators, which nobody could pull out.

On weekends in the afternoon, the theater offers workshops for children. After the classes, your child will know how to make a toy from a tin can, an inflatable balloon, and a washcloth.

After the show, check out the theater store. There are no tired souvenirs but cute marionette puppets, children's books, notebooks and calendars, clothes with funny drawings, and other valuable things.
