Sometimes it doesn't snow in Europe. But resourceful Europeans are not discouraged — when winter doesn't come to them, they invite it in. In Düsseldorf, the local authorities have decided not to wait for nature's grace and have created their own miniature ski resort. So if you're looking for a bit of cold, snow and action while on holiday in Düsseldorf with your child, welcome to the Jever Ski Hall — an indoor ski resort. Founded in 2001, the centre is about two dozen kilometres from Düsseldorf and is open to the public all year round.
If you love winter sports, this 22,000 square metre facility is your paradise. Whatever your level, the Jever Ski Hall offers fun for first-time skiers and adults with plenty of experience on the slopes.
It's just like a real ski resort: colour-coded difficulty levels as used in Europe, lots of clean, light and shiny snow, a range of slopes from 10% to 18%, rails, a snow park with half-pipe and kickers for snowboarders, and a 28% steep mountain for the pros! When you look at it all, it's easy to see why the Jever Ski Hall is where the national team trains regularly.
A visit to this ski resort is like being in a real Alpine or Swiss ski resort: modern chair lifts and cable cars take visitors to the summits, where they can take their first slide or enjoy another meteoric descent.
There's also a special light-level course for children, where young winter sports enthusiasts can exercise their strength, agility and courage. The only restriction is that children must be under 4 years of age.
There is a rental centre on site. Here you can always get all the equipment you need for downhill skiing. If you don't feel confident, you can hire an instructor. Jever Ski Hall employs professional and highly qualified instructors for children (the children's ski school is open from 1 October to 30 April) and adults.
Are you hungry? No problem! There are several alpine style cafes and restaurants in the entertainment complex. The décor, crockery, waiters' uniforms and even the national cuisine are all reminiscent of classic ski resorts across Europe. During the warmer months, the SalzburgerLand Kletterpark is open next to the ski centre.
