The South Park, or Südpark, is not far from the centre of Düsseldorf and is perfect for walks with children. The vast area of more than 70 hectares has shady alleys, lakes, flowerbeds, playgrounds and even a small zoo.
The zoo deserves a special mention. There are no exotic animals and all the animals here look as if they have stepped out of the pages of the first children's books. Sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, guinea pigs and poultry have been neighbours for so long that they take your attention for granted. The animals aren't kept in cages, but have spacious lawns, fenced in only to prevent them from scattering when walking. The park sells special food for the animals, although goats and rabbits like clover or grass. Swans and ducks swim in the many lakes and don't mind being fed by a child.
You can also have a great time walking around the park. This is a very well-kept corner of the city, landscaped to enhance the natural beauty of the area. The flowering plants have been carefully selected and decorate the park from early spring to mid autumn. The part of the park called 'Among the Gardens' is particularly picturesque. Sixteen themed gardens, separated by hedges, have been laid out around a large lake.
There are also unusual sculptures in the paths and lawns. One of the glades has a unique installation of rows of clocks that glow at dusk.
Part of the park has been replaced by an industrial estate, giving Düsseldorfers and visitors a lovely place to play badminton, cycle or take shelter from the sun. There are also miniature golf courses, cafes and restaurants in the park.
