It has long been commonplace for many Egyptian historical artefacts to be found in European museums. A rich collection of objects related to one of the Earth's oldest civilisations can also be found in Barcelona. The Catalonian capital received its Egyptian museum in 1994, founded by archaeologist Jordi Clos. This exhibition is incredibly fascinating for schoolchildren interested in the history of the Ancient World. But even lovers of the mysterious and mystical will not be bored.
The Museo Egipcio de Barcelona is one of the largest museums of its kind in Europe. Around 1,000 unique exhibits are on display, telling the story of the pharaohs and the Egyptians. Everything from papyrus with incomprehensible signs, images of gods with animal and bird heads, death masks of rulers, fayum mummy portraits, sarcophagi and even the sphinx... This is where you can see the tomb and not be afraid of being cursed by a pharaoh.
The Egyptian Museum in Barcelona focuses on different aspects of life in Ancient Egypt. The exhibition covers the state's power structure, beliefs and cults, and the development of trades and crafts. A special section is dedicated to funerary rites and the Egyptian beliefs about the afterlife. Here you can see pictures illustrating the myth of Osiris, ruler of the Kingdom of the Dead. The process of mummification and burial is also described in detail. Of course, there are also mummies in the museum, including the mummy of a cat, an animal revered as sacred in Egypt and a symbol of the goddess Bastet.
There are precious items in the scientific library of the Egyptian Museum in Barcelona. These include the work of Howard Carter, who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun, and the creation of Egyptian linguist Champollion, who found the key to reading Egyptian hieroglyphs.
The Egyptian Museum in Barcelona hosts periodic exhibitions on important Egyptological discoveries. There are also special guided tours for children from 5 years old, with the theme being the history of Ancient Egypt.
Note that Antoni Gaudí's famous creation is next to the museum, the Casa Batlló.
