Safari parks are very popular among family entertainment in Spain. Their difference from ordinary zoos is that the animals are placed in their usual habitat, and people can watch them from a distance. If you have chosen the Costa Blanca as your holiday destination, you may like an excursion to the Rio Safari Elche Zoo, which is half an hour's drive from Alicante.
At the entrance, all visitors receive a map of the territory. Orienting along it, you will not miss lions and tigers, do not forget to visit giraffes and camels, see llamas and lemurs, and look into the terrarium cave for snakes and lizards. Or vice versa — try to bypass someone who scares or provokes antipathy.
Many animals are allowed to feed at the Rio Safari Elche Zoo. To do this, you can buy special food at the checkout. The closest communication with animals occurs on the farm: this is part of the park where domesticated and farm animals live. For some children, chickens and cows are real exotic — they can see wild animals in an ordinary zoo, but you will not see pigs, goats, or sheep in the city.
You can spend hours wandering the park's lanes, spotting the nimble monkeys and admiring the colourful parrots. But you can also take a sightseeing train around most of the park. The train fare is included in the admission ticket.
The Rio Safari Elche also has excellent shows with elephants and sea lions. There are also periodic animal and bird exhibitions. The zoo offers a small pool, a playground and trampolines for children as extra fun. There is also a go-karting area with a track, small cars and motorbikes for the little ones. Open in the summer from 10:30 to 20:30. The Rio Safari Elche has a restaurant, a refreshment kiosk and an equipped picnic area.
As you'll spend a lot of time in the open, it's worth bringing hats, sunscreen and drinking water.
Rio Safari Elche is not the only attraction in the city. We recommend taking the children to the palm grove and the Paleontological Museum, where dinosaur skeletons are displayed.
