Cap Roig Botanical Garden

Cap Roig Botanical Garden

Spain, Calella de Palafrugell

An excellent and exciting holiday in Spain with a child would not be complete without visiting the most beautiful parks in the regions where you spend your holidays. For example, on the Costa Brava, you can't miss a trip to the Cap Roig Botanical Gardens located on the coast of this famous Spanish resort.

This green park full of flowering trees and shrubs, with its magnificent flowerbeds and manicured meadows and paths, is a true jewel of the Costa Brava. It covers an area of 17 hectares and is home to no less than a thousand species of plants.

It should be noted that the Cap Roig garden has a romantic history of its own. This unique landmark of the Costa Brava was created by the golden hands of the Woevodsky couple, the male half of whom had Russian roots. For over half a century, the loving couple has been putting their efforts and talents into arranging flowerbeds, lawns, alleys and greenhouses with equal ardour. The result is a garden with a natural landscape and a free-spirited taste independent of contemporary trends. It was not until 1969 that the green park was handed over to the local authorities. More recently, the garden on the Costa Brava has been officially called a botanical garden.

So what is this beautiful place, Cap Roig? The park is located in an area that slopes gently down to the sea, overlooking El Golfet Beach. You and your child will enter through a beautiful arch-shaped stone entrance wrapped in a natural decoration: fragrant bougainvillaea blossoms.

On entering the garden, you will be greeted by a natural palm grove with magnificent sea views of the San Sebastian lighthouse, the rocky promontory and the islets. This is the garden's highest point and serves as an observation deck.

Then it's a fascinating journey down to the beach through plantations of exotic plants. Descending towards the sea, you'll find more than 20 small themed areas with plants worldwide.

There is a cactus zone, an area of water-loving plants, agave plants, jungle plants, green alpine fields and many attractive trees, shrubs and flowers. In addition to the fragile flora, the Cap Roig gardens are also full of exquisite sculptures that faithfully convey this botanical garden's poetic atmosphere on the Costa Brava.

Cap Roig Gardens also hosts various events for all audiences, such as guided tours and literary meetings organised in cooperation with Fundació Josep Pla. In addition, since 2022, a new meeting hall has been in operation where various institutions hold meetings, touching on the themes of architecture, tourism and other issues of contemporary society.
