Overview
The NC State University Summer Textile Exploration Program (STEP) is a dynamic pre-college experience designed for rising high school seniors eager to explore the fascinating intersection of fashion, engineering, business, and science. Hosted by the Wilson College of Textiles, this week-long residential camp is more than just an introduction to textiles—it's a hands-on journey into one of the most innovative and evolving industries.
Each of the five weekly sessions allows up to 35 students to dive into specialized projects that align with their interests. Whether it’s designing sustainable fashion, experimenting with smart textiles, or exploring polymer chemistry, participants get to roll up their sleeves in state-of-the-art labs and studios. Past projects have included creating antimicrobial fabrics, crafting upcycled garments, and even developing textiles with light-up capabilities.
Mornings are dedicated to informative presentations about degree programs in textile engineering, chemistry, apparel technology management, and the college application process. Students also learn about scholarships, internships, and career opportunities within the textile industry. Afternoons are reserved for deep dives into their chosen project area, offering a blend of creativity and technical skill-building.
Beyond academics, STEP provides a taste of college life. Participants stay in NC State residence halls, dine on campus, and connect with current students, alumni, and faculty. They also tour leading textile manufacturers and brands to gain real-world insights into the industry.
By the end of the program, students leave with foundational knowledge in textile creation, marketing strategies for targeted consumers, and cutting-edge technologies shaping the field. For those passionate about fashion design or engineering—or simply curious about how textiles impact our daily lives—STEP offers an unforgettable summer filled with learning, collaboration, and inspiration.
