The Great Smokies Young Writers Workshop at UNC Asheville offers high school students a week-long opportunity to refine their literary skills in a collaborative and inspiring environment. This immersive program, running from June 16–21, 2024, is designed for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are passionate about creative writing. Led by experienced local authors and poets, participants will generate new work, revise pieces in progress, and critique others’ writing while exploring sensory details and poetic techniques. Study excerpts from beloved writers and poets to see how sensory details can be used sparingly yet effectively. Daily Schedule A typical day includes: Morning: Workshops on sensory writing or poetic techniques. Afternoon: Collaborative critique sessions or independent writing time. Evening: Recreational activities or readings by guest authors. Program Details Dates: June 16–21, 2024 Cost: $1,430 (includes lodging, meals, course materials, activities, and excursions).
