The Great Smokies Young Writers Workshop at UNC Asheville offers high school students a week-long opportunity to refine their literary skills in a collaborative and inspiring environment. This immersive program, running from June 16–21, 2024, is designed for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are passionate about creative writing. Led by experienced local authors and poets, participants will generate new work, revise pieces in progress, and critique others’ writing while exploring sensory details and poetic techniques. Program Highlights This workshop focuses on two key areas of creative writing: Come to Your Senses: Sensory Writing Learn to use all five senses—sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste—to ground your writing in vivid details. Explore prompts that tap into tactile experiences, synesthetic perspectives, and personal memories. Study excerpts from beloved writers and poets to see how sensory details can be used sparingly yet effectively. The Poet’s Toolbox Experiment with various poetic techniques and forms to expand your writing repertoire. Balance discipline and play as you explore the rules of poetry while embracing creative freedom. Build confidence in crafting and sharing your work through guided exercises and workshops. Daily Schedule A typical day includes: Morning: Workshops on sensory writing or poetic techniques. Afternoon: Collaborative critique sessions or independent writing time. Evening: Recreational activities or readings by guest authors. Program Details. Cost: $1,430 (includes lodging, meals, course materials, activities, and excursions). Scholarships are available through the Great Smokies Writing Program. Eligibility: Open to rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
