The River Ecology & Adventure program at UNC Asheville offers high school students a week-long immersive experience in the natural world. Designed for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors, this residential program combines field-based learning with outdoor adventures in the stunning Southern Appalachian region. Participants will explore stream ecology, investigate local aquatic species, and engage in thrilling activities like whitewater rafting and hiking to wilderness swimming holes—all while critically examining human impact on the environment. Program Highlights This program blends academic exploration with outdoor skills to provide a comprehensive and engaging experience: Stream Ecology: Learn about the unique ecosystems of Southern Appalachian streams and study aquatic species through field sampling and analysis. Human Impact: Reflect on how human activities affect aquatic environments and explore sustainable practices. Outdoor Adventures: Canoe pristine rivers, snorkel in mountain swimming holes, hike to waterfalls, and raft exciting whitewater rapids. Hands-On Learning: Participate in activities like water sample collection, species identification, and river stewardship. Daily Schedule A typical day includes: Morning: Breakfast at 8 a.m. Introductory lessons on stream ecology or water sampling activities. Afternoon: Lunch (often off-campus). Outdoor adventures such as canoeing, hiking, or whitewater rafting. Evening: Dinner at 5 p.m. Recreational activities like volleyball, game nights, or exploring Asheville. Lights out by 11 p.m. Program Details Cost: $1,830 (includes lodging, meals, course materials, activities, and excursions). Eligibility: Open to rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors (ages 14–18). Location: UNC Asheville campus A $500 deposit is required upon registration, with the remaining balance due by May 1, 2024.
