The UNC Asheville Pre-College Programs offer rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors the opportunity to immerse themselves in week-long academic and outdoor experiences. These programs combine hands-on learning, college-level study, and outdoor adventures in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains. With a wide range of topics such as STEM, arts, film, and ecology, students can explore their passions while gaining insight into university life and career options. Program Highlights Each program is designed to provide a balance of academic rigor and recreational activities: Dynamic Topics: Choose from engaging subjects like robotics, film scoring, video game design, ceramics, river ecology, music composition, and more. Hands-On Learning: Participate in interactive workshops, projects, and field-based activities led by expert faculty and industry professionals. Outdoor Adventures: Enjoy excursions such as hiking, canoeing, or exploring Asheville’s vibrant community. University Life: Live on campus in air-conditioned residence halls, dine in the Brown Dining Hall, and experience life as a college student. Sample Programs Video Game Design (June 16–21 or June 23–28): Learn game development using Unreal Engine 5. Playtest games in UNCA’s Esports Center. Create your own game assets while exploring game history and mechanics. River Ecology & Adventure (June 23–28): Study Southern Appalachian stream ecology through fieldwork. Engage in activities like whitewater rafting and hiking to wilderness swimming holes. Film Scoring & Sound Design (June 16–21): Compose cinematic music using professional tools. Work on sound design for films while learning scoring techniques. Ceramic Pottery (June 16–21): Create pottery using wheel-throwing and coil-building techniques. Paint with underglazes and take home your creations. Daily Schedule A typical day includes: Morning: Academic sessions or hands-on workshops. Afternoon: Outdoor activities or project work. Evening: Recreational activities like volleyball, movie nights, or exploring Asheville. Program Details Dates: June 16–21 or June 23–28, 2024 Eligibility: Open to rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors (ages 14–18). Tuition: Starting at $1,350 (includes lodging, meals, course materials, activities, and excursions). A $500 deposit is required upon registration with the remaining balance due by May 1, 2024.
