Holidays in the Czech Republic in June: pros and cons

Visiting the Czech Republic in June is one of the first ideas that come to mind. It's a short flight, the country is hospitable, there are plenty of sights to see, and the kids will have fun, too.

That's why tourists like to come to the Czech Republic in summer:

  • the weather is suitable for any kind of holiday — warm, but not hot; the rains can be, but not prolonged;
  • the days are long — a real gift for those who like city walks;
  • any kind of holiday is available — you can travel around the cities, go to the mountains, or improve your health at a mineral resort;
  • water parks and beaches are opening — you can also sunbathe and swim in a country without a sea;
  • numerous children's playgrounds are opening — the Children's Island in Prague will keep the kids busy all day long;
  • there are still not as many visitors as in the second half of summer — it is easier to rent a suitable apartment or buy a favorable tour.

Negative reviews about holidays in the Czech Republic in June are almost not found, although travelers note some disadvantages. Firstly, they complain about unpredictable weather. To weather vagaries should be prepared, then they will not spoil the mood.

Secondly, in June there are still noticeably more tourists than a month earlier. It is especially noticeable in Prague and spa resorts. Higher demand means higher prices for everything. If you buy tickets and book accommodation in advance, you can save a lot of money.

Thirdly, the summer season in the mountains is just beginning. If you need a rich entertainment program and animation for children, it is better to come to mountain resorts in July-August.

But, we agree, all these are trifles compared to how many beautiful things await you on your journey. It's time to choose where to holiday in the Czech Republic in June! And the first step is to find out what the weather forecast promises.

Weather in the Czech Republic in June

When planning excursions and city walks, you want it to be sunny and warm but not too hot. In the Czech Republic, the weather in June and July is precisely like this. There are, of course, a few cloudy and rainy days, but mostly, the sky is clear, and the sun is warm but not hot.

The weather at the beginning of June can be completely summer-like, or it can be chilly and damp. The cold weather usually lasts for a couple of days; then the warmth comes back.

The same can be said about the weather in the Czech Republic at the end of June. Hot days are sometimes replaced by cool days; rain makes you adjust your plans, but soon summer weather comes back again.

In Prague and Karlovy Vary, there are 6-7 rainy days in June. In the mountains, it rains more often and more abundantly. When going to the Czech Republic in June with a child, take umbrellas or waterproof mackintosh.

Air and water temperature

The climate of the Czech Republic is considered temperate, and this is not just a scientific characterization — it is the most accurate description of it. What is the temperature outside? Neither low nor high — moderate. What is the weather like? Not cold and not hot, the sun sometimes hides behind the clouds. In general, everything is in moderation.

  Daytime t Nighttime t
Prague +22,2°С +13,1°С
Karlovy Vary +20,7°С +10,7°С
Františkovy Lázně +19,9°С +11,0°С
Špindlerův Mlýn +17,3°С +11,3°С
Český Krumlov +21,5°С +11,4°С
Ostrava +22,6°С +13,4°С

The temperature in the Czech Republic in June depends on the region. In Prague, thermometers show +16°C to +30°C during the day and +10°C to +20°C at night. In Karlovy Vary, it is slightly colder, +12-27°C during the day and +8-16°C at night. In the mountains, daytime temperatures are only +10-20°C, and night temperatures are +5-16°C.

The water temperature in the Czech Republic in June ranges from +19°C to +22°C.

Beach holidays

There is no sea in the Czech Republic, but there are many beaches. The country's citizens sunbathe near rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and open-air swimming pools in summer. As a rule, entrance to well-maintained beaches is paid, but the facilities ensure comfortable and safe holidays.

The sandy beach Žluté Lázně starts operating in Prague in June. There is a children's playground, game courts, boat and catamaran rentals, a café, and an open-air cinema on the shore.

The Podolí water stadium with swimming pools for adults and children, the Petynka swimming pool with a grassy beach, and the Hloubětín swimming and sports center, where sea salt is added to the pools, are good places for recreation in the capital. The shores of the Gostivářský reservoir are very picturesque and easily accessible from the city center.

And where to go in the Czech Republic in June to sunbathe away from the city's noise? Lake Lhota, 40 kilometers from Prague, has sandy beaches and a picnic area in a pine forest. Mahovy Lake is always very crowded, but the place is so beautiful that you want to come here. The mineral water in Kamencovo Lake is considered curative, and a resort complex with entertainment for the whole family has been built on its shore. The Lipno Lake is also considered a real holiday resort — there is Stezka korunami stromů, an observation trail at the height of the treetops.

Spa vacations and treatments

The healing springs of the Czech Republic have been known for hundreds of years, and for two centuries, the local spas have had an excellent reputation. Imagine a small, elegant town with many gardens and parks, solid hotels, and complete peace — this alone has a positive effect on your well-being. If you want to undergo a course of treatment, you can trust doctors in sanatoria.

There is only one disadvantage of Czech thermal resorts — already at the beginning of June, there are a lot of holidaymakers, and the prices can hardly be called low. Even so, the trip will bring benefits and pleasure.

Karlovy Vary

The most respectable and expensive spa resort in the Czech Republic has existed since the 14th century. The water from the local springs helps with diseases of the digestive and endocrine systems and the musculoskeletal apparatus.

June in Karlovy Vary is not always warm. Sometimes thermometers show +20-25°C during the day, and sometimes only +12-15°C and colder temperatures are possible both at the beginning and end of June. At night, the air cools down to +8-16°C. The weather can be clear or cloudy, and periodically, there are pretty heavy rains.

Regardless of the weather, you should walk a lot at the resort — this is also part of the treatment. In the rain, you can stroll along the beautiful old colonnades where the well rooms are located, in sunny weather — in parks, gardens, or along the footpaths in the Slavkovský les (Slavkov Forest).

There are few children's activities in Karlovy Vary, mostly mini-clubs and playgrounds in the hotels. You can also visit several museums in the city, and the Loket and Sokolov castles and the Tepla Monastery are located nearby.

Younger tourists can be taken to Mariánské Lázně, where there is the Boheminium Park, an exhibition of miniatures depicting architectural landmarks in the Czech Republic.

The spa facilities in Karlovy Vary are excellent, but many tourists prefer to stay in hotels or apartments. There are hotels in the city designed for holidays with children.

Františkovy Lázně

If you want to choose a quieter and less pretentious spa resort than Karlovy Vary, consider Františkovi Lazne. It also has excellent treatment facilities, but the prices are somewhat lower. The June weather in the resort is changeable. Daytime temperatures range from +10°C to +30°C, night temperatures from +7°C to +16°C. During the month, there are up to a week of rainy days; sunny weather is more frequent than cloudy.

The spa specializes in diseases of the musculoskeletal apparatus, cardiovascular and genitourinary systems, and diseases associated with metabolic disorders.

Water from local springs and healing muds are used for treatment. There are about a dozen sanatoriums in Františkovy Lázně, as well as health centers operating based on hotels.

The tranquil town is suitable for holidays with younger children. You can visit the mini-zoo butterfly park, walk in the parks, relax on Lake America, and swim in the indoor and outdoor pools of the Aquaforum complex. In the program for older children, we recommend visiting the castles of Cheb, Seeberg, Wildstein, the Komorni Gurka volcano, and the Soos Nature Reserve.

Recreation in the mountains

The winter resorts of the Czech Republic take two months off after the skiing season and start welcoming guests again in June. The advantages of traveling to the mountains are complete peace, clean air, and opportunities for active recreation. Disadvantages — cool weather and frequent rains. In Špindlerův Mlýn, for example, the daytime temperature in June rarely rises above +20°C and one-third of the month is made up of rainy days.

When the days are sunny and warm, holidaymakers sunbathe and swim in the Špindl water park, spend time in the rope park Manki Park and Adventure Park, play sports games, and go on mountain trips. For families with children, there are special routes in the mountains with hiding places where little surprises are hidden.

In case of bad weather, you can plan a visit to the Lego Museum in Špindlerův Mlýn, the Museum of Northern Bohemia and the Museum of Technology in Liberec, and the ŠKODA Museum in Mladec Boleslav.

The choice of accommodation in the resort is good; there are expensive and budget hotels, apartments, and guest houses. Some hotels have mini-clubs, but it is worth checking whether there will be animators — often, the animation program is planned only for July-August.

Excursion holiday

Tourists in the Czech Republic often have a standard approach to sightseeing:

  • Visit the sights of Prague.
  • Go to Brno or Cesky Krumlov.
  • Walk around the Moravian Kras.

It's interesting, but it's only a tiny part of what's worth seeing. Starting with Prague is undoubtedly the right place to start. In mid-June, when the day is very long, you can walk from morning till night, seeing Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, Town Hall, Petřín Hill. Part of your time will be spent in museums — the historical and technical museums will provide an informative program. In contrast, the Dinosauria Museum, Lego Museum and the Museum of Magicians and Alchemists will provide entertainment.

"The Kingdom of Railways" will entertain and introduce the geography of the Czech Republic.

Further programs can be tailored to your preferences. If you go to Karlovy Vary and do not want to travel often, visit the local museums dedicated to Moser crystal and Becherovka liqueur. Not far from Karlovy Vary, in Sokolov, stands the Nostitzky Castle. A historical museum now occupies its premises with an extensive exposition devoted to mining.

If, on the contrary, you are interested in traveling around the country, you can organize a themed tour:

  • Castles of the Czech Republic. Ancient castles are not like one another. The jagged turrets of Hlubok nad Vltavou, the powerful silhouette of Žleb, the white walls of Špilberk, the Gothic Karlštejn, the ornate Orlik, the impregnable Loket — there are hundreds of well-preserved castles in the country, and each one is amazing in its way.
  • Old Towns. Even if we limit ourselves to only those cities that are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the list would be impressive: Prague, Cesky Krumlov, Telč, Kutná Hora, Třebíč.
  • Folk architecture. Here, we cannot fail to mention the archaeological park Všestary near Hradec Králové, the traditional Central European village of Holašovice, open-air museums in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm and Kouřim.
  • Natural sites. National parks and nature reserves occupy vast areas. The most beautiful places for recreation and tourism are the Moravian Kras, the Bohemian Paradise, the rocky town of Adršpach, the Besedice Rocks, and the Krkonoše mountain range.
  • Unusual sights. If you want to see something outlandish on your trip, visit the Church of All Saints in Sedlec (Kutná Hora), the interior of which is decorated with human bones and skulls. You can also visit St Jakob's Ossuary in Brno and the Devil's Head Rocks, decorated with creepy sculptures.

Entertainment for children

As soon as summer arrives, there are plenty opportunities to keep your child busy. Firstly, open-air water parks started operating. There are good water parks in Olomouc, Jihlava, Vyškov, Klášterec nad Ohře. The large water park Aquapalace in Čestlice has indoor and outdoor entertainment areas. If you are unlucky with the weather, you can rest in the indoor water parks in Prague, Liberec, and Pasoglavky (near Brno).

Secondly, amusement parks are opening. Majaland Amusement Park offers over a hundred attractions for children and adults. At the green areas of the AktionPark in Prague, you can play bubble football and foot-darts (and learn what they are).

In Milovice, 60 kilometers from the capital, there is the Mirakulum park — children can spend hours exploring play fortresses with mazes and underground tunnels.

Thirdly, a popular attraction in the Czech Republic — bobsleigh tracks — is available again in June. You can reach up to 60 km/h on the Prosek track in Prague. The track in Olomouc is complemented by other active entertainment. HappyWorld in Harrachov is illuminated, making the evening descent an incredible experience. The track in Špindlerův Mlýn is full of turns, jumps, and tunnels. For children from 7-8 years old, there are special sleds for independent downhill skiing.

A trip to the zoo offers a more relaxing holiday. A visit to the Prague Zoo should take at least half a day — and how much time will it take if you spend at least a minute looking at each of the 600 species of animals? Good zoological gardens are in Pilsen, Liberec, Dvur Králové, and Ostrava.

Sometimes, however, a good playground is enough for your child to use up some extra energy. In Prague, Children's Island is considered the best play area, and in June, children can already go to the water playgrounds.

Holidays, events and festivals

Who would have thought that the Czech Republic's festivities in June would have tourists traveling around the country? At the beginning of summer, there is an excellent reason to go to Cesky Krumlov, where the Five-Petalled Rose Festival occurs. This rose symbolizes the Rožmberk dynasty, whose estate is in the town.

The festival is dedicated to medieval culture, and for a few days, Cesky Krumlov is flooded with people in period clothing. If you want to join the procession, you can choose knight's armor or monk's robes at the fair.

In Prague, the beginning of June is dedicated to the United Islands Festival. In addition to concerts, the program includes exhibitions and other themed events.

On 1 June, all Czech cities celebrate International Children´s Day. Often, museums, theatres, and zoos organize entertainment for children on these days, and sometimes, they offer free admission for young visitors.

Cost of vacation

Prices in the Czech Republic in June increase in proportion to the number of tourists. The most expensive months for holidays are July and August, but in early summer, you can still have a budget holiday.

Airfares

If you book early, flights to Prague are only 2-5% more expensive than in May. If you buy tickets shortly before departure, their price can be 10-20% higher than in May. In July, air tickets become even more expensive.

Accommodation

Prices for accommodation in July are comparable to May, but the later you book, the higher the price will be. In July, the cost increases even more.

Package Tours

With the arrival of summer, the demand for tours increases, and with it, the price of package holidays. The price difference with May can reach 10-15%. In July, prices continue to rise.

Food

Getting to know the national cuisine in the Czech Republic is equal to sightseeing. Brahmboráčka soup in a loaf of bread, roasted pork leg, dumplings, and, of course, beer are the things that all tourists want to try. The peculiarity is that authentic cuisine is easier to find in those restaurants where locals dine. Prices in a tourist and ordinary establishment may differ twice: in an inexpensive place, lunch for one person will cost 100-120 CZK, and in a popular one — min. 200 CZK. In reputable restaurants, a dinner with alcohol for two people will cost at least 1000 CZK.

If you are going to cook on your own, shops will please you with assortment and prices. However, according to reviews about holidays in the Czech Republic in June, it is challenging to buy delicious fruit and vegetables in supermarkets — it is better to buy them at the markets.

Shopping

If you have time to go shopping, you can make a good purchase. Prices in shops of well-known brands in the Czech Republic are slightly lower than in Europe, and the assortment is quite broad. Pay attention to locally made clothes and shoes.

You can always find something special in Bohemian glass shops and Granát jewelry salons. Natural cosmetics are usually bought in Manufaktura chain shops. Children will be pleased with Czech toys. We also recommend paying attention to Kostka Hanušovice scooters, which can withstand extreme use.

Tips for traveling with children

What could spoil a holiday in the Czech Republic in June with children? There may be no answer to this question. If the hotel is booked and the tickets are bought, everything will be fine. We have prepared some tips that will help you not to forget about important little things.

  • A raincoat or umbrella is a mandatory part of your luggage. After a few sunny days, a cloud can come, and rain can fall: don't let bad weather ruin your vacation.
  • It is advisable to take sunscreen with you to the mountains. Although summer is the rainiest time there, there are plenty of sunny days.
  • Even if the weather forecast promises warmth, take light jackets and jumpers. Cold weather can come on suddenly, and evenings in June are often cool.
  • Many grocery shops are open until lunchtime on Saturday and closed on Sunday. If you are traveling with a child who is not yet suitable for adult food, bring a small supply of baby food.

Overall, the Czech Republic in June is a fantastic destination for families with kids. With its combination of culture, history, and natural beauty, it offers something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, the Czech Republic is sure to provide an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
