Salou is a small resort town 90 km from Barcelona, considered Costa Dorada's tourist centre. It is a model resort because it has all the ingredients for a perfect holiday: five Blue Flag beaches in the city, several entertainment venues, including Spain's best amusement park, Port Aventura, good quality hotels, plenty of cafes and shops and other facilities.

In summer, it is pretty hot here; in August, the thermometer rarely falls below +30 ° C. However, the Mediterranean breezes mitigate the high temperatures. The city's abundance of green spaces provides ample shade and freshens the air. In this article, Kidpassage details holidays in Salou in late summer.

Holidays in Salou in August: pros and cons

Reviews of holidays in Salou in August, many of which are on tourist forums, describe Salou as a good holiday destination. Here are the main advantages of a summer holiday in the main resort on the Costa Dorada:

  • Sea water temperature. Most tourists come to Salou just for the beach holiday and certainly get it. The Balearic Sea boasts high temperatures that are suitable even for small children.
  • Weather conditions. August in Spain is hot, but the Mediterranean climate makes the heat in August much more accessible to bear than in more arid regions, for example.
  • The opportunity to visit the legendary PortAventura theme park.

In general, the resort has many advantages that are not tied to a particular time of year. There are family-friendly hotels, excellent clean beaches, a wide range of entertainment for children and adults, proximity to the airport and much more.

Salou doesn't have many drawbacks in August. It's the crowds of tourists that are the most annoying. August is the end of the holiday and school holidays season, so there is no shortage of people in the resort.

Tourists with babies and older people should also remember that it's hot at the middle and end of the month. The temperatures aren't critical, but Salou should be considered for September if you like calm and refreshing weather.

Beach holidays in Salou

Salou is a beach resort, and it is mainly those who prioritise lounging on the beach over sightseeing. In high season, the coastline is a busy place to be. People worldwide are attracted to the beaches, many of which receive the EU Blue Flag award.

Levante

The most famous beach area is Levante, located in the city centre. This spacious beach is 1,200m long and 100m wide, making visitors feel a little looser than on other beaches where no room to swing a cat. The Levante has all the necessary infrastructure and plenty of entertainment. There is even free Wi-Fi.

Ponent

The second most popular and largest beach is Ponent Beach. Remarkably, it is still considered a 'women's' beach. The reason is that in the old days, when communal bathing was forbidden, Ponent was visited exclusively by women. There is a high infrastructure level but unlike Levante, it is less crowded and noisy.

Capellans

Capellança, adjacent to the Levante, does not boast a large area — it is just over 200m long. The beach is protected on both sides by breakwaters and does not have high waves, a big plus for tourists with children. The advantages of the beach for families are also the quiet sandy bottom and the entertainment for kids. However, the beach has a significant disadvantage as it is not easily accessible. The only way to reach Capellance is down a steep staircase or a gentle descent. Such a descent is no easy task with a pram or small child.

Ljarga

Another popular spot for bathing is Ljarga beach, hidden from civilisation by a dense wall of tall pine trees. It offers excellent conditions for recovery, with the local air being a peculiar mixture of the scent of the sea and the smell of pine trees. Compared to Levante, Ljarga is a less crowded beach.

Until recently, this beach was a "wilderness", but thanks to the local authorities, it is now equipped with all the necessary facilities for relaxation: umbrella and sun lounger hire, changing cabins, water sports equipment rentals, playgrounds and many other amenities that make the beach holiday more comfortable and pleasant.

Ljarga is usually chosen by holidaymakers with young children. There are many reasons why this beach is an ideal place for children: it is less crowded than other city beaches, the access to the water is safe, and the water is clean and clear. Ljarga is a quiet place, away from the noise of the city. Children can splash in the sea and sunbathe on the warm sand and take walks with their parents through the pine forest if the beach gets a bit sunny.

Tour holidays in Salou

The seaside resort of Salou is not replete with impressive sights, but that doesn't mean you have to restrict yourself to a beach holiday. There are monuments, museums, fascinating architecture and simply beautiful places to stroll around in the evenings.

One of the best places to start in Salou is on Boulevard, King Jaime I, one of the most famous promenades in Salou. The boulevard is always crowded, especially in the evenings when the fountain show starts, an incredible spectacle that attracts hundreds of tourists.

The white-tiled promenade is quite picturesque, with palm trees planted on both sides of the street, adding to the beauty of the promenade. At the centre of the street is a monument to King Jaime, and at the end of the street are several Catalan modernist manor houses, including the famous Villa Voramar. Boulevard Jaime I is bustling with strollers from morning to night in early August and offers little privacy.

The most crucial architectural attraction is the Old Fortress (Torre Vella). This majestic structure dated back to the 16th century and was created to protect the Salou coast from attacks by pirates. Surprisingly, it has survived almost unchanged to this day.

Today Torre Vella houses an exhibition of twentieth-century paintings and the Museum of Modern Enamel. Around the Old Fortress is a small garden where it is pleasant to relax at the end of August, taking shelter in the shade of the sprawling trees.

If architecture appeals to you, visiting the Church of Santa María del Mar is recommended. Those more interested in the beautiful scenery and natural world will enjoy the Botanical Gardens, which are not very large, but this feature only makes them cosier. Children will love visiting the following locations:

Holidays, events, festivals

Holidays in Salou in August are infrequent. Generally, the entertainment is not an annual event and is not tied to specific dates.

During the second week of August, Salou hosts the Golden Nights music festival every year. The programme is wide-ranging: in addition to musical performances and traditional concerts by vocal and dance groups, there are street fireworks, theatre performances and the election of a festival queen.

15 August is an official country-wide holiday connected to the most important religious event, the Assumption of Mary.

Save your warm clothes for the coming autumn, as the Costa Dorada has a hot summer in August. But despite the high temperatures, take one set of warm clothes just in case. To avoid forgetting anything while you're packing, make a packing list that includes the following items:

  • a swimming costume, or even better, two (while one is drying, rest on the beach in the other);
  • headgear;
  • a light dress or sundress (preferably from natural fabrics: linen or cotton);
  • T-shirts, tennis shirts, etc.;
  • shorts;
  • a light cardigan that covers your shoulders (this is part of your body that gets burned up the quickest while walking);
  • beach flip-flops;
  • sandals;
  • trainers.

Tips for travelling with kids

August is a reasonable period for family holidays. Yes, at the end of summer, it is pretty hot here, but on the other hand, it is for the warmth that tourists go to the coast.

It is moderately warm here in summer, and although the sun is hot, it is still not too aggressive. If you follow the precautions (apply suntan creams, wear hats, and visit the beach only in the morning and afternoon), the rest will be pleasant and safe.

Tourists with children of different ages come to Salou. Rest will appeal to both kids and teenagers because the local entertainment program is quite extensive. What is only Port Aventura worth, where you can spend more than one day!

You will learn what other resorts in the country you can visit at the end of summer from the Kidpassage article “Spain in August”. Spend the hot season having fun and keep only pleasant memories of summer that will warm you on cloudy autumn and frosty winter evenings.
