The German capital is home to one of the branches of the famous Madame Tussauds wax museum. There are 11 branches around the world, and Berlin was the sixth to open.
This event took place on 5 July 2008 and since then the museum has become one of the most interesting sights in the city. The building is located in the heart of Berlin, on the boulevard Unter den Linden, next to the Brandenburg Gate. The museum covers an area of 2,500 square metres.
The mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, greets visitors as if inviting them to enter the museum. Of course, we are talking about the mayor's wax figure, because that is the kind of celebrity you see here.
But where else can you and your children hold Einstein, pinch Britney Spears or take a picture with Sigmund Freud? The chance to touch the exhibits and take photos with the characters is one of the museum's main attractions.
The wax "inhabitants" of the place are arranged in nine rooms, each dedicated to a particular theme. In the first room, for example, there are figures of famous politicians, including O. Bismarck, A. Merkel, B. Obama, W. Churchill and others.
There is also a figure of Adolf Hitler, with whom an unpleasant story is connected. On the day of the museum's opening, a visitor tore off the head of the statue to express his dissatisfaction.
Legoland Discovery Center is 1.3 km away and is an excellent place for lego fans.
Museum officials decided to keep the waxwork because Hitler is an important figure in the country's history. It shows him haggard and having already decided to take his own life. The figure is separated from visitors by glass and it is forbidden to take photographs of it — the only such rule in the museum.
In the world of showbiz, guests are greeted by Mike Jackson, the Beatles, Madonna, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Beyoncé and Robbie Williams. There are stars who rose to fame many years ago but are still loved today — Marlene Dietrich, Liza Minnelli, Marilyn Monroe. The latter is pictured in her famous white dress.
Anyone can try on the exact same outfit, stand over the air vent and have their photo taken next to the actress. All the figures, not just Marilyn, are surrounded by matching pictures, making them even more realistic.
In the sports section, the figures of football goalkeeper Oliver Kahn and tennis player Boris Becker stand out. The museum has rooms with famous cultural figures, TV personalities and, of course, the section that children will love the most - the superheroes. Here you can have your picture taken with Shrek and Spiderman.
All the figures are made with maximum realism thanks to the work of a whole team of specialists. The process of creating wax figures is explained and demonstrated in detail in the room dedicated to the process of creating wax figures.
