What could be nicer, more fun and more interesting than a walk in the open air with your child? The Palmengarten, located in a district of Frankfurt am Main, is the only place to go. It was laid out in the second half of the 19th century and has since become one of the most popular places for Frankfurters to walk and relax.
Many local families have long bought special season tickets to the Palmengarten so that they can enjoy the park's wonderful natural surroundings at any time of the year. The entrance fee is also not too expensive for tourists.
What is this botanical garden? It is a 20-hectare landscaped park with a wide variety of plant species (including the most exotic). As its name suggests, it is dominated by palm trees of all kinds, which cover an area of 9 hectares.
As well as the palms, the garden has greenhouses (14 in all), lots of colourful flower beds and a large, clear lake. The Palm Garden is also very suitable for families with children: there are many comfortable benches where you can sit and lie down in a pleasant half-sleep.
The Palm Garden is a true oasis in the heart of civilisation. It was first opened to the public in 1871. Since its inception, the garden has delighted locals and visitors alike with the freshness, beauty and brightness of its greenery, flowers and palm trees.
The park retains its oldest building, the Palmeral, an eighteen-metre-high glass house renovated in 1929. At the entrance to the park you can buy an information booklet which gives the history of the botanical gardens, a map of the area and details of where the different species grow.
Children will enjoy the outdoor areas with fountains, flower beds and marble sculptures, and you can hire a boat for a stroll around the lake. It's worth noting that the Palmengarten not only offers interesting and informative tours, but also hosts themed festivals and concerts.
Frankfurt's Palmengarten, like every other park in the civilised metropolis, has a well-equipped children's playground. The Kiko children's kiosk in the northern part of the park sells light snacks, drinks and delicious ice creams. The highlight of the park is the Palmengarten Express, a miniature railway that will delight all young visitors.
