The sea off the coast of the Costa de Almeria is not teeming with bright fish, as, for example, in Egypt. But the inhabitants of the waters can be seen in the aquarium in Roquetas de Mar. Its primary goals are to showcase fish and invertebrate species typical of the Mediterranean Sea, reveal some of the oceans' secrets, tell about the water cycle in nature and allow visitors to get to know the harmless inhabitants of the waters.
The aquarium is not very big, but it will be interesting for children to look into the underwater world. In separate large containers of Aquarium Roquetas, colourful fish from tropical seas and nondescript predators who prefer to remain invisible, graceful seahorses and creepy squids, smiling stingrays, and gloomy groupers live. A very unusual exposition — fish that live among the roots of mangrove forests. Among them, there are jumping fish that can wait out the drought on the trees.
Through the panoramic window of the aquarium dedicated to the inhabitants of the oceans, you can discover some of the typical life forms found in open water masses, such as gregarious fish species and bottom dwellers, as well as sand tiger sharks.
A separate corner of the aquarium is dedicated to Posidonia. For the sake of simplicity, Posidonia is called algae, but it is a true underwater plant which plays an important role. As one of the main producers of oxygen, it helps to fix the seabed, is a food source and provides shelter for many species.
If you are holidaying in Roquetas de Mar with children, a must-visit is the contact pool aquarium at the beginning of the Mediterranean room. Here you can hold a starfish in your hand, pet a stingray or fantasise about what kind of music a guitarfish would suit. Koi carp can also be fed, and special food is sold for them.
Unfortunately, the technical services of the aquarium cannot be visited on a guided tour. But here's a secret: The Aquarium Roquetas has a kitchen where food is prepared for the fish. Not only protein dishes but also spinach, carrots, peas and corn are on the menu of the sea creatures.
You can also watch divers swim with the sharks in the vast aquarium. The Costa de Almería Aquarium offers a fantastic opportunity to swim among the sharks and get up close and personal with these animals. Dive with the divers at the Aquarium Oceanarium and enjoy one of the best dives of your life! Do not miss this exceptional experience!
After visiting the exhibition halls, stop by the souvenir shop, where you'll find something interesting to remember.
