Torremolinos is a city open to the sun. It is what tourists come here for: children's holidays in Costa del Sol contribute to the recovery. And even the greenery of the city park La Bateria does not obscure the sun so that you can walk and sunbathe simultaneously.
The park was laid out in 2007 on the site where the artillery battery was used to defend the city during the Spanish Civil War. Although the need to shoot back from the enemy has long disappeared, the defence lines have been restored, and the guns are in their original place — only now they are an excursion object.
Is Bateria Park Worth a Visit?
If you're looking for a larger, more shady park, consider parks such as Paloma Park in Benalmadena or the Botanical Garden Molino de Inca. If you're planning a short exploratory visit, this park is ideal.
The most prominent building of Parque La Bateria, an observation tower built in the 15th century, was also part of the city's defence complex. Now you can climb the 15-meter tower by a spiral staircase or an elevator to see the close sea, the tangled streets of Torremolinos and the outskirts of neighbouring Benalmadena. The view from there is impressive since the park stands on a hill, and the tower was built on its top. Looking around the surroundings, remember to look for the park playground to hurry there.
At the entrance to the playground for children, there is a sculpture: three boys busy playing. According to the sculptor's idea, they come up with entertainment for themselves, but little visitors to the park will find many intricate slides and swings on the site. There are toilets for children and fountains with drinking water next to the play area. There are benches in the shade of trees.
But the rest of the park — and its area is about 74 thousand square meters — deserves attention. Although the vegetation seems relatively poor, there are only 25 species of trees, but each species is unique. For example, here you can see little silver-blue palm trees from Madagascar, Cockscomb Coral (Erythrina crista-galli) hung with bright red flowers — a plant from South America, and fragrant melaleuca from Australia. Thanks to the work of masters of gardening art, bushes and crowns of trees acquire an unusual shape: you want to dive under a green umbrella or roll a bush ball along the alley.
Services
A neat hedge surrounds an artificial lake of more than 9000 square metres with a sculpture of Neptune in the centre. You can hire a boat and sail to the figure of the lord of the seas or a small islet resembling an ancient temple's ruins. The pond is only 60 cm deep, so it's safe to swim in.
The city park in Torremolinos has several cafés as well as vending machines. However, you can take your food if necessary. Note that although the park is close to the promenade, the entrance is on the side of Via Decano Antonio Seoane.
