Family holidays in Bramberg am Wildkogel

The modern family with children, who prefer fun and outdoor activities, who love skiing and sledging, who are not afraid of frost and who do not seek luxury this is the typical guest portrait of the Bramberg am Wildkogel winter resort.

This small resort is specially designed for families: there are many easy pistes, a couple of children's snowparks, lots of entertainment and great hotels with a range of services for children. And all of this at a much lower price than in neighbouring large resorts.

Read about all the benefits of a family holiday in Bramberg am Wildkogel in the Kidpassage overview.

Bramberg am Wildkogel on the map of Austria

Bramberg am Wildkogel, or Wildkogel Arena, is a ski resort in the western part of Austria, in Salzburg, in the Hohe Tauern National Park. It is part of the district of Zell am See (the administrative centre of Zell am See). The distance from the resort to Salzburg is 140 km, to Innsbruck —113 km, to Munich (Germany) —166 km.

The ski resorts in the Kitzbühel Alps, where Bramberg am Wildkogel is located, are 10-50 km away. For this reason, an extended ski pass, the Salzburger Supercard, allows you to ski at Wildkogel and three other large ski resorts.

Bramberg am Wildkogel for kids

The Bramberg am Wildkogel ski resort, it should be said, is not only a ski resort. There are slopes, and quite a few, but it is not customary to limit oneself to skiing.

It's all down to the fantastic 14-kilometre toboggan run. It is where skiers take off their skis and sledge down the mountain on a wooden sledge. So don't be surprised if you see tobogganers proudly loading their sledge into the lifts at Wildkogel. Other winter activities in the resort also take up plenty of time. Toddlers will love the playgrounds, while older children will enjoy snowshoeing and night hikes with torches.

And yet, Bramberg am Wildkogel is also the place to go skiing with children.

It's an excellent place for beginners, with gentle slopes, comprehensive, easy runs and professional instructors. Children learn to ski in a particular area that is more like an amusement park.

You can visit the challenging slopes if you consider yourself an experienced skier. You can get some extra impressions at the neighbouring resorts: nearby are the major ski areas of Kitzbühel and Zell am See - Kaprun.

Summer vacations in Bramberg am Wildkogel are not less popular. In and near the resort are many water fun centres, playgrounds, hiking and biking trails. At this time, people come to the mountains with an infant.

And another important fact: in 2018 Bramberg am Wildkogel was named the best family resort in Austria. The child-friendly ski infrastructure, the family-friendly hotels where you can relax with your child, and Bramberg am Wildkogel's entertainment program for children all played a role.

Best time to travel

Officially, the season in Bramberg am Wildkogel opens at the beginning of December and closes in the last week of April. However, experienced skiers prefer to take their holidays between the end of December and the end of March, when the snow cover is at its best.

The winters in Austria's high mountain resorts are long and snowy, so skiers love the Alps. The climate in Bramberg will also delight skiers: from December to April, the slopes are covered in snow, and the moderate frost only adds to the excitement.

Winter arrives as early as November. The daytime temperature still rises above zero, but at night it gets colder, dropping to -3-8°C. Tickets for adults cost around €2.60, and children's tickets are half-price. You can hire a car to get around Bramberg am Wildkogel. Things to do with kids

What can you do with children in Bramberg am Wildkogel? The answer is simple: sleigh rides.

The resort has a 14-kilometre-long toboggan run, the longest in Austria, and it's even lit up at night. It takes at least half an hour to get down the Bramberg toboggan run! There are four other toboggan runs in the resort.

During your family holiday in Bramberg, you can also enjoy other winter activities: play on the playgrounds (not only for school children), go skating, and play curling. For older children, we can also suggest cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. The evening walks with torches and deer watching in the Habachtal Valley are impressive.

In Bramberg am Wildkogel, there are unique winter rides for preschool children. The children ride on Haflinger stunt horses. Winter activities are also available at the farm near Bramberg. Every child will be interested in playing with snowballs, building a snowman and then going to the barns to feed the calves and watch the laying hens.

You can also take a trip to the neighbouring resorts. For example, you and your child can stroll through the charming town of Zell-am-See, and visit the Spa Tauern World water park in Kaprun or the Alpeniglu ice village near Kitzbühel.

Alpine Skiing

The main difference between Bramberg am Wildkogel and the larger resorts is that there are no separate ski areas. The lifts from both villages take you to the Braunkogel area, with slopes of all difficulty levels. Red and blue slopes are more or less equal: you can spend time with children, even if they are learning to ski.

The Funslope & Family Park is another excellent place to ski with your child in Bramberg am Wildkogel. The obstacle course and tricks in the snow park require some experience, but as the slope is relatively gentle, even beginners can enjoy the park. Each village also has its own children's playground.

Two children's snow parks are at the bottom of the ski lifts, and two more — Kogel-Mogel Kinderland — are on the slopes. These playgrounds offer perhaps the most fun lessons at the Bramberg ski schools — lots of fun and benefits for children from 3 to 5 years old.

The Bramberg kindergartens are available for children aged 2 to 3 who are too young to start downhill skiing.

Summer holidays

What does the resort have to offer young tourists? Several times a week, there are unique entertainment and educational activities for children. Some of the most popular activities include a creative workshop in the open air near the Bramberg Museum, where children can watch bread being baked in the oven and even try their hand at baking; a visit to an organic farm; and the Wool House, where you can learn about the processing of sheep's wool and even take part in a masterclass to make a pendant.

There will also be time for games. Neukirchen, Bramberg and Wald have open-air swimming pools with playgrounds for children. There are also open-air aquatic centres in Kitzbühel, Zell am See, Elmau and Soell.

In summer, the winter village of Kogel-Mogel is transformed into an adventure park with ropes courses, climbing walls and trampolines.

We also recommend guided tours for the whole family on one of the themed routes, such as the Miners' Route with a visit to the Hochfeld copper mine or the Emerald Route, where you can enjoy the region's natural beauty to the full.

For those who love cycling, "Arena" has prepared 800 km of routes of varying difficulty. The authoritative publication Bike has named the Wildkogel Bike Arena one of the best regions in the Alps for cycling.

Attractions

You can learn even more about the riches of this part of the Alps at the museum of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern.

Or you'd like to take your child to the highest waterfalls in Europe, the Krimml Waterfalls. You can get there by bus, but it's much more fun to take the train, powered by a real old steam locomotive.

And here are some other things to see in and around Bramberg am Wildkogel:

  •     The 12th century castle and retro car museum in Kaprun;

There are several good family hotels in the Bramberg-Neukirchen area, but they are outside the main settlements. Their entertainment programme and all-inclusive restaurant system compensate for their remoteness from entertainment and restaurants.
