Friedrichsfelde Zoo, one of Berlin's two zoos, is located in the eastern part of the city. It is one of the largest in Europe, with around 7,500 animals from 846 species spread over 160 hectares.
Throughout the day, you can wander through the aviaries and admire the funny, cute and sometimes menacing animals. A child, on the other hand, usually knows what to expect on a visit to the zoo. They will meet monkeys, giraffes, bears, tigers and many other animals. Friedrichsfelde, on the other hand, has its own special features and is well worth a visit.
For one thing, the Berlin Zoo has its own elephant breeding programme, which has resulted in the successful breeding of these large mammals. On Saturdays and Sundays, visitors are greeted with an elephant bath at midday. Adults and mischievous elephants play in the pool. Both adult animals and naughty elephants splash around in the pool.
Secondly, it is always very interesting to be present when the animals are being fed. In the Cat House, the big carnivores get their treats every day except Fridays, while the Zoo's guests can watch.
Thirdly, the lemurs receive special attention in a tree-lined section of the zoo called the Vari Forest. Black, white and red lemurs are certainly not tame, but they do not hide from people and it is very easy to see them in all their glory. I have to say that some of the other inhabitants of the zoo manage without cages. Pelicans, for example, roam freely on the lawns. You can even pet a lion or a bison — but not a real one, because the whole area is decorated with amazing animal sculptures.
Fourthly, Friedrichsfelde is responsible for returning zoo-born animals to the wild and reintroducing them to their relatives. Examples include the Przewalski's horse and the bearded hawk. At the same time, efforts are being made to conserve the populations of endangered species, including the chanterelle-like lesser panda and the baker's pig.
It is worth mentioning that there is also an architectural monument on the territory of the zoo — Friedrichsfelde Palace, built in the 18th century. Part of the castle's interior has been preserved and it is still used for balls and concerts. It also houses the Zoo Museum.
Please note that bicycles and scooters are not allowed in the zoo.
