Park and Zoo Kaisergarten

Park and Zoo Kaisergarten

Germany, Oberhausen

The Royal Garden, where Oberhausen Castle stands majestically, is beautiful, peaceful and spacious. There's also a wildlife area, home to many species of animals and birds. And all this splendour is right in the heart of Oberhausen. Isn't that a great reason to take your child to Kaisergarten?

The people of the town and surrounding area consider their square to be the most beautiful and distinctive in the region. And not without reason, as the 28 hectares of fertile land on the south bank of the full-flowing Rhine-Herne Canal have literally everything you need for a relaxing family holiday with children. It's important to note that the local zoo, located on the grounds of the Royal Gardens, is already quite respectable and famous: it celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2013.

The history of the zoo is simple: it was once the site of a simple botanical garden, displaying a variety of plant species. In 1938, the city council decided to dedicate 5 acres of land to the zoo so that visitors could not only admire the lush vegetation, but also get to know the fauna. Today, in the Royal Garden, you can take a morning stroll along the manicured walkways, cross Tobias Rehberger's "Slinky Springs to Fame" spiral bridge across Rhine-Herne Canal, visit the Louis Gallery in the Palace, play with your child in the many well-equipped playgrounds, shoot arrows and play mini-golf in the summer, and take a ride down the hill in a horse-drawn sleigh in the winter.

Of course, the main attraction at Kaisergarten is the zoo with its picturesque ponds. There are horses, pigs, guinea pigs, goats, sheep, reptiles, rodents, lynxes and lots of birds. Some of the animals can be fed — there are special signs on the enclosures. You can buy carrots for the cuddly ones at the entrance.

There is a picnic area near the garden. There are tables, benches, barbecues and gazebos. If you come to the Kaisergarten with your dog, it must be kept on a lead. After a stroll through the Royal Gardens of Oberhausen, we recommend a visit to the Sea Life Aquarium and the Legoland Discovery Centre Oberhausen, both nearby.
