With its architecture, the beautiful castle of Santa Barbara resembles a monumental fortress. It is located in the heart of Alicante, on Mount Benacantil (height 166 meters). We recommend you this local attraction as an interesting place to visit. Thanks to this excursion, We are sure your holiday with children in Alicante will sparkle with new colours.
The castle towers majestically over the city, making it ideal for capturing the local scenery. If you climb to the structure's highest point, you can get an almost bird's eye view of your surroundings. Don't be intimidated by the high altitude; the local authorities have several climbing options, including for visitors with children (more on those later).
Santa Barbara Fortress in Alicante once had towers and impressive cannons in its loopholes. In other words, it was a natural bulwark, preventing incursions from the outside. Today it is a monumental structure divided roughly into three differently-tiered zones. Each of them was built at a different time.
The Tower of Honour in the fortress is its tallest and oldest part. Nearby are fragments of an ancient citadel dating back to the fourteenth century. The middle part of Santa Barbara Castle in Alicante was built in the 16th century, and here you can see the Guardhouse, the Hall of King Felipe II, the Queen's Bastion and the Court of Arms. The youngest part of the fortress is the outside, built in the 18th century. This is where you can show your child the famous Revellín del Bon Repós bastion.
Be sure to visit this symbol of the city with your young traveller. The Santa Barbara Castle is worth the arduous climb to see this ancient structure's beauty and its panoramic views. However, if it's a hot day, we recommend hiking to the castle in the morning or late afternoon rather than noon, when the sun is hitting hardest.
By the way, for lazy tourists, travellers with children or the elderly, the local authorities have organised a simple and easy access to the fortress, which runs directly inside Mount Benacantil. It is a high-speed lift that takes everyone up to the top in the blink of an eye.
If you get tired and hungry, you can rest and eat at one of the small cafes in Ereta Park, on the slope of the mountain. There is also an exciting exhibition hall here.
