Project PLANTS is an exciting summer camp for rising 7th graders who are passionate about exploring the natural world and discovering science from a fresh perspective. Hosted at the JC Raulston Arboretum, this camp offers hands-on activities that dive into topics such as plant development, propagation, breeding, vegetable and fruit production, and post-harvest issues. Campers will also learn about environmental stewardship, gaining a deeper understanding of how plants impact our ecosystems and food systems. Each day is filled with fun, interactive projects like building solar ovens, creating hydroponics systems, and even tending to their own garden plots. Campers will also enjoy field trips to local farms and research facilities, where they’ll meet scientists, researchers, and farmers who bring the day’s theme to life. Past trips have included visits to Bayer Bee Care, Sweet Pea Urban Farms, and the horticultural facilities at NC State University. This camp is perfect for students who are eager to engage in STEM topics related to horticulture and agriculture. With a focus on hands-on learning, campers will leave with a newfound appreciation for everyday science and the natural world around them.
