Holidays in Tenerife in September: pros and cons of the trip

The beginning of autumn on the island is considered the start of the high season for a reason: at this time, the waters of the Atlantic warm up to the maximum temperature, and the weather is sunny and warm. Tourists are happy to come here and leave excellent reviews about holidays in Tenerife in September. It is worth noting that there is virtually no low season: the island always attracts travellers, alternating periods of early and late warm spring, regardless of calendar dates.

Let's name the pros of travelling in September.

  • The air temperature usually does not rise above +25 ° C, is not too hot, and the probability of sunburn is minimal.
  • Thanks to the weather, the tour programme will be as extensive and varied as you want — it can be combined with beach rest without problems.
  • The ocean by September warms up to the maximum temperatures; therefore, sea bathing during this period is the most comfortable for children.
  • Local fruits here are unusually juicy and tasty. You will find a fresh harvest of excellent pomegranates at the beginning of autumn.

On the downside, perhaps, it is worth noting that Tenerife is not for leisurely and unlimited beach holidays. It can be windy sometimes, and underwater currents can cool the ocean water for a couple of days. On such days it is worth visiting local attractions.

Weather in Tenerife in September

You don't have to worry about the weather in September and October — it won't cause trouble. The island is sunny and warm, and the ocean water is hot. It's better not to forget about sunscreen — on a hot day, a light breeze and the sun can harm your baby's delicate skin and yours. Otherwise, Tenerife is exceptionally hospitable and friendly.

Weather at the beginning of September is not hot and almost does not differ from August; daytime thermometers keep between +21 °С - +24 °С. Nights are cooler — the air cools down to +16 °С, so you will need a light jacket for an evening walk.

Daytime temperatures in Tenerife in mid-September can rise to +26 ° C, but it drops by 8 - 10 degrees at night. It can be chilly, but it is pleasant to enjoy hot coffee on a beautiful autumn morning.

The weather in Tenerife at the end of September does not change; it remains warm, with daytime temperatures around +24 ° C - +25 ° C and nighttime — not lower than +14 ° C.

Air and water temperature

The climate of Tenerife is unique: mild, not hot, with no abrupt change of seasons. Summer smoothly passes into autumn, mild, slightly cool winter and spring comes again. You won't be able to swim here all year, but you can get a tan practically any time of the year.

Air temperature in Tenerife in September

The average temperature in Tenerife in September is +24.5 °С during the day and about +19.8 °С at night. This weather is comfortable for long walks, excursions to the Teide volcano and other natural wonders.

Water temperature in Tenerife in September

By the beginning of autumn, the average water temperature in the Atlantic Ocean is +24.2 °C, reaching its maximum annual value. Swimming at this time is especially pleasant, given the relatively warm weather.

Sometimes cool currents come to the coast, and then you will need to find something else to do for a couple of days, which, on the island, is not difficult.

Precipitation

In September, you won't be bothered by the rain: the total rainfall is around 42.4 mm, and there are no more than three rainy days throughout the month. You can safely leave your umbrella at home — rain is typically of short duration and won't spoil your plans.

Sunny, cloudy and overcast days

The daylight hours in September are between 11.9 and 12.7, almost an hour less than in the previous month.

There are about 22 sunny days in Tenerife (73% of all days of the month), six days with variable cloudiness (20%) and no more than two cloudy days during the whole month (7% of the total number of days).

Beach Holidays

It is hard to argue with the fact that the island's beaches are one of its main attractions. They can satisfy any interest of their holidaymakers. Surfers can easily find big waves, lovers of secluded holidays can enjoy the majesty of the rocks and the power of the ocean on the "wild" beaches, and couples with babies will find excellent coasts with a gentle entrance to the sea and calm water. You can choose everything: the colour of the sand, the presence or absence of facilities, and the location on the island.

Las Vistas Beach

This coastline is considered the longest in the south of Tenerife. The beach is located in a bay formed by mountains, a stone breakwater stands guard not far from the shore and does not allow strong waves, and the golden sand and stunning scenery finally explain its popularity with tourists.

There are some facilities like sun loungers and umbrellas, showers and changing cabins, and playgrounds for sports games. Fans of night walks should know that restaurants and bars on this beach continue their work even after midnight.

Los Gigantes Beach

On this coastline, you will enjoy the dark volcanic sand combined with the white foam of the waves and take advantage of all its benefits. The volcanic sand is believed to have healing properties and positively affect people with musculoskeletal problems.

The beach has been awarded a Blue Flag for its environmental and safety credentials. It is perfect for romantic couples or families with children: it is not too crowded, quiet and usually peaceful.

Tours Holidays

Thanks to the excellent weather, the absence of frequent rainfall and the unbearable heat, a sightseeing holiday on the island will be as remarkable as a beach holiday. A wide range of activities is guaranteed: fun water parks, museums, nature parks and even volcano climbing are just some exciting things Tenerife offers.

ARTlandya Doll Museum

A wonderful tropical garden with stone houses in the Canarian style, which houses a collection of 600 unique dolls — works of puppetry — will help diversify the excursion programme. They are made of wax, vinyl, clay, porcelain, ceramics, felt and papier-mâché. Each of them has its own story, not similar to others, and its own master, who put his heart and soul into this creation.

The estate owners know everything about their wards, welcome their guests warmly and treat them to coffee and fruit from their garden. This museum is ideal for a family outing in early August.

Jungle Park

The rocky desert area on the southern part of the island is home to an incredible artificial park with lush vegetation imported from various countries and more than a hundred species of animals and birds. The park's pride is its collection of birds of prey, which participate in unique shows held twice daily. Not only do eagles demonstrate their skills — you can see what toucans, hornbills and parrots can do.

Taking a family walk in the park on a nice day in mid-September, you can feed and even pet other animals in spacious enclosures. And if you watch a sea lion show, you will see how artistic they can be.

Buying the "Jungle Park + Aqualand Costa Adeje Waterpark" combo ticket will save you money.

Forestal Park Tenerife

If your family loves activities, sports and light, extreme sports, Tenerife offers a trip to the rope park located in Las Lagunetas. Among the places you have planned to visit at the end of September, this will be among your favourites.

More than ten routes with different levels of difficulty (for children, parents and experienced athletes) are strictly supervised by instructors. The most extreme routes are at the level of the tops of pine trees at a height of 7 metres, but only experienced adults have access to them. In addition to ropeways, rope ladders and obstacles at altitude, the park offers different active games and entertainment.

For a visit with children we also recommend:

Holidays, events and festivals

The Canarians have a knack for partying, including the monthly romerias with festive parades, fairs and street parties. But there are other festivals in Tenerife in September. Don't be left behind; join in the fun, as this is the only way to experience the unique atmosphere of this island.

The Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel is honoured in Los Cristianos, where in addition to festive processions and services, there are folklore concerts and evening fireworks. No less solemnly celebrated and religious event in honour of Christ — the island's sanctuary — in La Laguna. There is also no shortage of mass revelry and festive fireworks here.

The Canary Islands welcome the Fimucité International Music and Film Festival in early autumn. The event showcases world premieres and recalls the best soundtracks to famous films.

Cost of vacation in September

While in other seaside destinations the beach season comes to an end by the beginning of autumn, in Tenerife, it just continues, accompanied by all the necessary attributes. It is not hot, the ocean water is well warmed up, and prices in Tenerife in September fluctuate slightly, given that there is practically no sharp change of seasons here.

Package Tours

The cost of tours, compared to August, increased by 13%. Still, there is something beautiful about travelling in September, which increases the popularity of trips at this time. And tour operators, as usual, promptly respond to it. Therefore, you need to start preparing for the trip a few months before the vacation.

Airfares

On the other hand, airlines reduce the price of flights by up to 20%, so by booking your tickets in advance, you'll further reduce their cost, getting an excellent autumn holiday at an affordable price.

Accommodation

The average price per person per night in September is €94, 28% lower than the August price of €132. You can save money by booking in advance and buying a package tour so that the average price per person can be significantly reduced.

Food and Transport

Several gastronomic trends have influenced the formation of island cuisine. Portugal, France and even North Africa have made their contribution. Tenerife is always tasty, juicy, and sometimes unusual, but fresh and high quality.

It is worth noting that local food is highly diverse. Here you will taste traditional tapas and famous Spanish paella, local wrinkled potatoes (Papas Arrugadas) and invariable tortilla, Canarian cheeses, classic jamon and spicy pork sausages chorizo.

Despite the availability of seafood, fish specialities are not cheap and are well prepared in small fishing villages, where the cost can be lower than in a restaurant. Traditional meat dishes, such as Canarian goat stewed with spices or wild Canarian rabbit, are also popular.

The main public transport on the island is buses, represented by a single transport company, Titsa. They offer plenty of routes to get you anywhere in Tenerife without any problems. They all run according to the timetable on the company's website. If you plan to travel around the island by bus for some time, it will be better not to pay for each trip separately but to buy Bono Bus passes (Spanish: Bono Bus), which will cost almost half the price.

Don't forget to put the card to the reader not only at the entrance but also at the exit. Otherwise, it will be charged for the whole route to the final stop.

Tips for holidays with children

A September family trip to Tenerife is a great idea. It's not hot, the water is warm, and you need everything for a holiday with your little ones. Plenty of beaches on the island have a gentle entrance to the water, fine sand and good facilities. When choosing one, remember that the southern part of Tenerife is usually warmer.

Be sure to bring some warm clothes in case of a chilly evening, and don't forget about sun protection.
