Holidays with Children in August 2023: Days Full of Summer

  • 0
  • 2

The third month of summer is like the third bell in a theatre: you have to hurry or the doors will close. And it seems that this does not apply to holidays, it seems that everyone knows about  countries where it is warm all year round, and yet this bell is ringing we must hurry, the summer is passing, the children are about to go to school.

In fact, August has to be lived through anyway. Why not let the Mediterranean sun wake you up in the morning, watermelon and halloumi cheese for lunch, the sound of the waves in the evening?

Why not leave the megapolis for a small town by the lake? Why not swap your tired work-home commute for a new coffeehouse-museum-amusement park route? Read Kidpassage's article on the best ways to travel with children in August.

Holidays with a child in August: pros and cons

Thinking about where to go with children in August is not easy. It is clear that it is difficult to travel with a child in the heat, that everywhere is full of holidaymakers and that prices are exorbitant. However, to make this decision you need to be optimistic and rational.

Firstly, there are some undeniable advantages to going on holiday in August:

  • The warmest sea is in this month;
  • The tourism sector is operating at 100 per cent capacity;
  • The last month of summer is full of extraordinary festivals and celebrations;
  • The fruit shops are full of fresh fruit and vegetables;
  • Summer discounts are at their peak.

Secondly, August is the end of the season for the Adriatic, Black Sea and Sea of Azov resorts. As autumn approaches, the weather can get very cold in Bulgaria, Croatia, Montenegro and the Mediterranean Costa Brava in Spain.

Thirdly, the sea is not the only option for a family holiday. In August, it is probably better to go with a child to a place where the sun is not scorching and where, instead of the beach, there are beautiful cities or picturesque lakes, the tranquillity of museums or the fun of an amusement park. Fourthly, you can also save money on high season holidays. Find out more about where to go and how to spend less.

Weather conditions for popular resorts

August's heatwave is easier to deal with when you think of the rain and cold to come. For now, however, the resorts are sunny and even too warm — thermometers rarely show less than +30°C. The Mediterranean, Aegean, Ionian, Adriatic and Black Seas water is warm to the max — try to persuade a child to dry off on the beach.

The further away from the sea, the cooler (and probably more comfortable) it will be. Moderately warm weather favours lakes in Austria, Hungary, Slovenia and trips to northern Europe.

Beach holiday

August is the hottest month in Europe's seaside resorts. And that's all the more reason to go swimming before breakfast, enjoy a long, lazy siesta, take long walks in the evenings and wonder how small resorts can accommodate so many tourists.

Zakynthos, Greece

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 2

Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • Small peaceful resorts;
  • Sandy beaches;
  • Good conditions for a budget holiday.

 Pay attention to the following:

  • Limited sightseeing and entertainment programme;
  • The capital is easier to reach by car from the resort villages;
  • Apartments dominate the resorts.

The weather in Zakynthos in August is the same all year round. The thermometer reads +28-32°C during the day and +25-27°C at night; the water in the Ionian Sea is warm at +27°C, and the sun shines every day.

Other reasons to choose this Greek island for an August holiday by the sea with children are the Blue Flag sandy beaches, the shallow entry to the water and the variety of beach activities.

If you want tranquillity, the south of Zakynthos is a marine reserve with Caretta-caretta turtles and a noise ban.

Boat trips, water parks and small amusement parks make for a varied family holiday on the island. You can also visit the Venetian fortress of Zakynthos, the Helmis Natural History Museum and the National Marine Park Centre. The neighbouring islands of Kefalonia and Marathonisi are fun for teenagers.

The quietest resorts on Zakynthos for holidays with children are Vasilikos, Kalamaki, Limni Keri (the only village with a pebble beach), Tsilivi, Alykes, and Alikanas. There are family-friendly hotels on the island, but tourists often rent apartments. The infrastructure in the villages is well-developed.

Alanya, Turkey

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 3
Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • A variety of activities;
  • The sandy beaches of Inzhekum and Avsallar;
  •  Holidays are cheaper than in other resorts in Turkey.

Pay attention to the following:

  • Most of the resort's beaches are pebbly or rocky;
  • It can be scorching and sticky;
  • Most flights arrive at Antalya airport, a long way from the resort.

Holidays with children in Turkey in August are trendy, even though daytime temperatures can reach +30-35°C in the shade and are only a few degrees cooler at night. The only thing that keeps the heat out of Alanya is the mild humidity, the breeze and swimming in the sea.

The water temperature on the coast is between +29°C and +30°C in August. In search of a comfortable holiday, tourists usually go to Cleopatra Beach, one of the few sandy beaches in Alanya. Elsewhere the coastline is covered with pebbles, and rocky platforms are in the sea. For a sandy holiday, head to the nearby villages of Avsallar and Inzhekum.

Alanya has a varied programme of excursions and entertainment. Younger children will enjoy Water Planet, Sealanya Sea Park and Luna Park. Older children will enjoy the Seljuk Fortress, Damlatas Cave, Manavgat Waterfall and the Green Canyon.

Holidays in Alanya are slightly cheaper than in other resorts on Turkey's Mediterranean coast. There are family hotels with an all-inclusive concept and more modest hotels and apartments. Many people prefer to stay in small villages near Alanya during the high season.

Ayia Napa, Cyprus

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 4

Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • The best sandy beaches in Cyprus;
  • The largest water park on the island;
  • Convenient tourism facilities.

Pay attention to the following:

  • Holidays are more expensive than in other Cypriot resorts;
  • The centre is full of buzzing entertainment;
  •  August is not a good time for excursions.

An August holiday in Cyprus with a child is a challenge for tourists who like to sleep late. For a healthy late summer tan, it's best to hit the beach early in the morning, as temperatures rise to 30-35°C later in the day and the sun beats down mercilessly. The water temperature remains around +28-29°C.

Of all the resorts in Cyprus, Ayia Napa has the most beautiful beaches. The sandy coastline is well-maintained and equipped, and the resort's beaches are awarded the prestigious Blue Flag yearly. The coast is naturally bustling in August; even the long, outlying beaches are crowded.

A visit to the WaterWorld and Luna Park, a trip on a glass-bottomed boat or a stroll through the Cyherbia Botanical Gardens can add a splash of colour to your holiday. The Thalassa Maritime Museum and the Oceanarium in neighbouring Protaras offer an escape from the heat.

Ayia Napa has some lovely family-friendly hotels, but there is also a wide choice of apartments. When looking for accommodation, look for hotels and apartments away from the centre of the resort and away from the hustle and bustle of Nissi Beach.

Bugibba, Malta

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 5
Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • Tranquil resort;
  • Plenty of activities for children;
  • Summer language camps.

Pay attention to the following:

  • The sea near the shore is deep; you have to use dock ladders to get down to the water;
  • Little green space;
  • The hotels offer only basic services for families with children.

Beaches are just one of the things about Malta. But in late summer, when the air temperature rises to +30-35°C and the water temperature in the Mediterranean to +27-28°C, you don't want excursions or language classes; you want sunbathing and swimming.

Bugibba is one of Malta's top resorts for a beach holiday with children in August. There are plenty of sandy beaches, although you'll have to use a ladder to get to the water. For this reason, Bugibba is best for older children who are more adept at treading water, while the gentle beaches of Mellieha are preferable for younger children.

English language summer camps are another reason to visit Bujibba with teenagers. You can plan your programme while teenagers study and relax with their peers.

You can also have fun with pre-schoolers. Local attractions in and around the village include the Aquarium in Aura, the Splash & Fun water park, the Mediterraneo Bio Park and the Popeye Village in Mellieha. There is also a bus tour route through Bugibba.

The resort has few family-friendly hotels, so apartments are more likely to be rented. You can also stay in the neighbouring villages of Aura and St Pauls Bay.

Costa Brava, Spain

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 6
Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • Small, family-friendly resorts;
  • Moderate heat and warm seas;
  • Excellent sightseeing and entertainment.

Pay attention to the following:

  • Some resorts have rocky beaches;
  • Rainfall is possible in late August;
  • The region is crowded with holidaymakers.

The very north of Spain's Mediterranean coast is a special place. Its resorts are certified as 'Family Tourism Destinations', and there's so much to do that a day's holiday is like no other.

The Costa Brava is chosen for a holiday with a child in August in Spain because it is not as hot as other resorts. The temperature during the day does not always rise above +30°C; at night, it can drop to +20°C. The sea is a little cooler than in Costa Blanca or Mallorca, around +25-26°C, but it's still comfortable for children.

The region's beaches all have the Blue flag. The best sandy beaches are found in Lloret de Mar and Blanes, while the other resorts are primarily rocky. Roses, where the wind always blows, has a windsurfing centre.

Many resorts have water parks, high ropes courses and attractions for the little ones. And just a short drive away is Barcelona, where even the most discerning tourists will be amazed.

The hotels in the certified family-friendly resorts are child-friendly. Finding a quiet resort in August is hard, but Lloret de Mar is the busiest.

Northern Dalmatia, Croatia

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 7
Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • Beaches with easy access to the water;
  • Many attractions;
  • Two international airports are close by.

Pay attention to the following:

  • The region is popular with Europeans who book accommodation a year in advance;
  • Some resort beaches are rocky or concrete;
  • Relatively few family-friendly hotels.

While Game of Thrones fans take Dubrovnik by storm, lovers of quiet enjoy their holidays in northern Dalmatia. Families with children love the resorts in this Croatian region for their excellent beaches, a wide range of activities and well-developed infrastructure.

Soak up the sun and take a good sun cream if you are travelling with your child in August, as although Croatia is further north than many other popular holiday destinations, the sun can be fierce. The air temperature in late summer ranges from +25°C to +35°C, while the water temperature in the Adriatic reaches +24-26°C.

The best sandy beach in the region is in Ninja. The coast in Voditsa is covered with fine and medium pebbles, which does not spoil the experience. Sibenik has good beaches. In Zadar, the coast is rocky, but there are landscaped areas.

Northern Dalmatia will appeal to those who don't like to sit still. You can hire a car to listen to the sea organ in Zadar, see old fortresses in Sibenik, and visit lakes Vrani and Plitvice, the Krka waterfalls and the salt lake of Mir on the island of Dugi Otok. Families with children can enjoy the Solaris water park and play centre in Sibenik, rope parks and playgrounds on the beaches and hotels.

Herceg Novi Riviera, Montenegro

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 8
Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • Very nice small towns;
  • Varied programme of excursions;
  •  Warm, calm sea.

Pay attention to the following:

  • Not the best choice if you only want to sunbathe and swim;
  • Not all beaches are suitable for children;
  • There are few activities for pre-schoolers.

Montenegro is always on the list of places to go to the sea with children in August, although there are few good beaches. It is the country to choose if you want to combine a beach holiday with sightseeing.

Among the resorts in the Bay of Kotor, Tivat and Igalo near Herceg Novi have lovely sandy beaches for children. On the Lustica peninsula, the coast is covered with pebbles, but the conditions for recreation are excellent.

It should be mentioned that the second half of the summer is the short period when the water in the Boko Kotor Bay gets as warm as +25-28°С. The air temperature during the day is around +28-32°C; at night, it gets colder to +15-23°C.

As for excursions, the main attractions of the Herceg Novi Riviera are the old town of Kotor, the three fortresses of Herceg Novi, the rocky island of Gospa od Skrpela, the national parks of Lovcen and Durmitor.

The region is not suitable for travelling with small children. As local hotels are not family-oriented, many tourists rent apartments and organise their leisure time and meals.

Golden Sands, Bulgaria

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 9
Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • 3.5km long and 100 m wide sandy beach;
  • Family-friendly hotels with a decent range of facilities for children;
  • An abundance of greenery.

Pay attention to the following:

  • The resort is quite noisy;
  • Second and third line hotels are located on high ground.

Can a holiday abroad with children in August be cheap? It can be if you choose one of the resorts in Bulgaria. The country is friendly to tourists on a modest budget, but the experience is perfect.

August in Golden Sands means sunny weather, minimal chance of rain, moderate heat (usually no higher than +30°C), and the Black Sea warms up to +25-27°C. Not surprisingly, people spend most of their time on the beach. And the resort's beach is great - long, wide, covered with fine sand, well-maintained and accessible.

Some first-class hotels have their own children's beaches with playgrounds. Another advantage of family hotels is the organisation of children's activities. Many hotels in Golden Sands have mini-clubs, swimming pools and discos for children. Children will also enjoy the Aquapolis water park and the promenade with its many attractions.

There is a direct bus service from the resort to Varna, with other attractions such as the Seaside Park with amusement rides, the Dolphinarium, the Aquarium and the Sea Museum. The Retro Museum exposition is more likely to impress older tourists.

Among the hotels in Golden Sands, we recommend those that operate on an all-inclusive basis. It is especially true if you stay at the Riviera Resort, located outside the resort.

Lakes Holidays

Not all travellers appreciate the heat up to +35°C and the hot sea. Those who don't want to bask in the sun, but don't want to be cold, often head to Europe's lakes. The moderate heat, spectacular scenery and well-developed tourist infrastructure of these places make for a great summer holiday. Here are some ideas of where to go with a child in August.

Carinthia, Austria

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 10
Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • Mild weather;
  • Comfortable lakeside resorts;
  • Excellent conditions for outdoor activities.

Pay attention to the following:

  • The beaches are mostly grassy;
  • The lakes are crowded in August;
  • The best way to get there is by car.

The state of Carinthia, in the south of Austria, has more than 200 beautiful lakes. With a climate similar to the Mediterranean, Carinthia has a thriving spa industry.

Lake Werther sees water temperatures of up to +27°C in August. The lake offers superb beaches, water attractions, children's playgrounds, hiking and cycling. The resorts on Lake Millstätter See have a very relaxed atmosphere. There are windsurfing and diving schools and a sailing school.

Lake Klopeiner see is considered to be the most child-friendly lake. The water warms up to +28°C, and the smooth bottom and clear water make it ideal for baby swimming.

However, it should be noted that the air temperature in the Austrian lakeside resorts in August ranges from +20°C to +30°C; at night, it can be +5-15°C, and it often rains. Excursions can be planned to take advantage of this: Children will love the Minimundus Museum in Klagenfurt, the Puppet Museum in Treffen, the Porsche Museum in Gmünd, Landskron Castle in Fillach, Affenberg Salem. The little ones will love the Dwarf Park in Gurk.

Balaton, Hungary

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 11
Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • Extensive landscaped beaches;
  • Vast green areas;
  • Family-friendly hotels.

Pay attention to the following:

  • Nights can be quite cold;
  • Entrance to the beaches is usually subject to a charge;
  • The northern shore is steeper, and the depths build up quickly.

Lake Balaton is not called the Hungarian Sea for anything — it is the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe and a pleasant place for a beach holiday with children in August. The air temperature at the end of the summer stays at +24-30°C; the water temperature reaches +24-26°C; it rains very rarely, so you can sunbathe and swim to your heart's content.

The best Blue Flag beaches are on the southern shore of Lake Balaton. Almost everywhere, there are areas with shallow water and places where you have to go down a ladder into the water. Most of the beaches are grassy, with parks stretching along the shore.

There are often water fun, sports and children's playgrounds along the beach. Balatonfüred has one of Hungary's best water parks. Other resorts offer rope parks and activity centres.

There is plenty to see and do near the lake: the Lozi and Tavas Caves, the Buffalo Reserve, the Sigliget and Sümeg Castles, the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum in Tihany and the African Museum in the Pribalaton Hills National Park.

Accommodation in Balaton varies in price and comfort. The quieter Balatonfüred is considered best for a holiday with a baby, while the lively Siofok may be too noisy.

Bled, Slovenia

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 12
Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • A peaceful atmosphere even during high season;
  • Specialised hotels for families with children;
  • Opportunities for outdoor activities.

Pay attention to the following:

  • Children's activities are mainly concentrated in hotels;
  • Accommodation is booked by tourists many months in advance;
  • The best area to stay is between Bled Castle and Straža Hill.

August is not only the warmest month of the year at Lake Bled but also the best time to visit. Daytime temperatures range from +16 to 28°C, the weather is mostly sunny, and it rains, but not for long. If you come to the lake with a child in early August, you'll probably be able to swim, as the water heats up to +24-25°C on warm days.

The beaches at Bled are pebbled or grassy. Access to the water is from pontoons, and a section of shallow water is only at the western end of the lake. The beaches are quiet, even in high season, as there are no traditional water activities.

The main attraction of this place is its tranquillity. But tranquillity does not mean boredom: several museums in Bled Castle, the Triglav National Park, the Vintgar Canyon, the Iglitsa waterfall, and other natural attractions are nearby. There are small museums in the towns around the lake.

There are few attractions for children, but the rope park, bobsleigh run and Dinopark will keep them busy. Specialised family hotels have been built on the shores of the lake with entertainment programmes for younger guests. There are also many villas, apartments and guest houses.

Tour holidays

At the end of summer, all the beautiful cities are teeming with tourists. And if it's hard to find quiet now, you should at least go somewhere that isn't too hot. Here are a few options for where to take your child in August to get the most out of it.

Dusseldorf, Germany

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 13
Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • A major international airport;
  • Many parks;
  • Fewer tourists than in Berlin or Munich.

Pay attention to the following:

  • Most places for families to visit are outside the city;
  • Rains are possible, and there is a noticeable cold spell at night;
  • You can stay in Oberhausen or Duisburg.

Düsseldorf is a city for the curious and restless traveller. Firstly, because the sights are scattered all over the place: from the old town, with its town hall, the Radschläger monument and the boat docks, you want to move on to the Kaiserwerth (Friedrich Barbarossa's castle and the Löbbecke Aquazoo museum) and then to the Grafenberg forest (the forest zoo is more like a natural habitat for animals). On the other hand, there are even more exciting things to see near the city.

A whole day can be spent in Oberhausen, home to the Sea Life Aquarium, the vast water park and the LEGOLAND centre. The main reason to go to Bottrop is for one of Germany's best theme parks, Movie Park. At the Duisburg Children's Museum, you can find answers to questions such as why ships sail, how archaeologists determine the age of artefacts and where the centre of gravity is. And at the Neanderthal Museum in Mettmann, children can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the Stone Age.

Riga, Latvia

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 14
Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • The old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site;
  • A rich excursion programme;
  • Impeccable sandy beaches.

Pay attention to the following:

  • You will only need a car for trips outside Riga;
  •  Hotels are mainly mid-range;
  •  Daytime temperatures range from +16°C to +28°C.

You can get a taste of Riga in one day: see the Town Hall, the House of Blackheads, the Cathedral with its dome, Riga Castle, take a boat trip on the Daugava River, try sylküpudins or tsarnikava lamprey.

If you stay longer in the Latvian capital, you will have a chance to see some less advertised but no less exciting things. In summer, the Kalnciems, where 19th-century wooden buildings have been restored, are a real eye-catcher. An open-air ethnographic museum is a peaceful place. Children will love the rides at Nik Nik Park or the giant playground at Grizinkalns.

There's plenty to do even when it's raining: of Riga's many museums, the Medical History Museum and the Natural History Museum are particularly worth a visit. If you come to Riga with your children in mid-August, you might even get a chance to sunbathe. The Baltic Sea only gets as warm as +19-22°C, but the well-equipped, blue-flagged sandy beaches make for a great break after sightseeing.

Oslo, Norway

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 15
Photo: pixabay.com

You'll love it:

  • Mild weather;
  • Variety of museums;
  • Opportunities for outdoor activities.

Pay attention to the following:

  • One of the most expensive countries in Europe;
  • It gets as cold as +8-12°C at night;
  • Many museums close at 4 pm.

Oslo seems to have everything — the Royal Palace, the islands, the city centre forest, museums, herring, trolls... The order in which you explore it all depends on your preference.

Don't miss the Town Hall, which is very different from European town halls; the schooner Fram, which sailed to the North and South Poles; the Kon-Tiki Museum, with a life-size replica of Thor Heyerdahl's ship; and the Munch Museum, which includes the famous painting "The Scream".

For children, there is the Stovner Lookout Trail above the treetops, the TusenFryd amusement park in Winterbro (20 km from Oslo), the Interactive Science and Technology Museum, the Rope Park and the Children's Art Museum.

And the capital's most famous troll lives in the Holmenkollen area, where the ski jump is located, and the Biathlon World Cup is held annually.

Amusement parks

Sometimes a family trip to a theme park is just a fantastic complement to a trip to a museum. But there are theme parks that can be the highlight of the trip: they're the only reason people go on a trip. Where can you spend August with a child for an unforgettable trip? Here are some win-win options.

Phantasia Land, Germany

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 16
Photo: facebook.com/phantasialand

You'll love it:

  • Original design of the themed areas;
  • A variety of attractions for adults and children;
  • Free admission for children on their birthdays.

Pay attention to the following:

  • The park includes two hotels;
  • Some attractions can be accessed without queuing by purchasing a Quick Pass;
  • Tickets are available for 1 and 2 days.

To see the Mayan pyramids, Chinese pagodas or the Djenne mosque, you must travel halfway around the world — or go to Phantasia Land, near Düsseldorf and Cologne. It is divided into several themed areas, each so colourfully designed that it looks like a real piece of land has been given to the park.

The rides are also impressive. A dragon can be seen making deadly loops in the sky, magical trees tell stories, and ghosts await visitors in the corridors of an old castle. There's a children's playground for the little ones. It is also where the funniest shows take place. Bring a change of clothes for your child: no one has ever left the water playground dry.

Liseberg, Sweden

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 17
Photo: facebook.com/lisebergab/

You'll love it:

  • A roller coaster the record-breaking Balder and Valkyria;
  • A large play area for children;
  • Maximum comfort for parents with babies.

Pay attention to the following:
Many types of tickets with a different set of features;
The park is closed on some days in August;
The journey from Stockholm takes 5-7 hours.

Scandinavia's largest amusement park, Liseberg, was originally a beautiful huge garden. The first rides appeared here 100 years ago - hasn't a classic double-decker merry-go-round taken children on rides ever since?

Today the rides are modern: the Valkyria rollercoaster, where cars plunge 50 metres into an underground tunnel, the Kållerado, where boats race down a raging river; and the Loke, which hurls daredevils into the sky.

There are about as many rides for children as there are for adults. Children can also spend half the day in the playground with trampolines, bouncy castles and quiet corners.

The park has a unique tradition: children about to give up their dolls can give them to the rabbits in the Rabbit House. Liseberg has two dozen cafés and restaurants, a hotel and a car park.

Tivoli, Denmark

holidays with children in august {kidyear}: days full of summer photo 18
Photo: tivoli.dk

You'll love it:

  • Classic and modern attractions;
  • Сonvenient opening hours;
  • Services for families with young children.

Pay attention to the following:

  • The park has 25 attractions in total;
  • The aquarium is not included in the ticket price;
  • Loud rock concerts on Friday evenings.

Quiet Denmark is often mentioned as one of the best countries for a holiday with children in August. And, of course, Tivoli tops the list of Danish attractions. So where do you start? You could ride on the roller coaster, which dates back to 1914.

Or the Ferris Wheel, which has been in the park since the middle of the last century. Or from the Mine, home of the dragon. Or the Fata Morgana ride, where you can choose your level of extreme.

And the right place to start is the mini-theatre Den flyvende Kuffert, where characters from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales come to life (the author is said to have been one of Tivoli's first guests). The park also has an aquarium that reproduces the fauna of coral reefs. Tivoli has restaurants and cafés and a green picnic area in the park.

Events, celebrations and festivals

Whichever resort you visit in August, whichever town you visit, you can be sure to catch a festival, fair or competition. These events — sure to be exciting and well organised - are mainly aimed at tourists. So where to look for something special?

Spain's main attraction in August is the La Tomatina festival in Buñol. For the tomato battle, 150 tonnes of ripe fruit are brought into the town and rivers of tomato juice flow through the streets.

For those who don't want to fight, we recommend arriving in Buñol for a paella competition the day before.

In the UK, the Notting Hill Carnival takes place in August. It aims to bring together people of different nationalities and cultures. Born as a protest against race riots in London, the carnival is now simply a spectator event attracting millions.

In Italy, 15 August is a special day. In other Catholic countries, the Feast of the Assumption is celebrated with solemn church services. However, Italians also celebrate Ferragosto, an official holiday since Emperor Octavian Augustus. Ferragosto is celebrated with theatrical performances in the town squares and young people splashing about on the beaches. Most people head for the countryside, the mountains or the sea.

In Hungary, 20 August is Saint Stephen's Day, or the day the Hungarian state was founded. You can see a parade in Budapest and fireworks over the Danube in the evening.
August highlights include the Salzburg Academic Music Festival and Budapest's Sziget Festival, which has hosted Radiohead, Prodigy, Placebo, Avicii, Muse, Gorillaz, Arctic Monkeys, Twenty-One Pilots and more.

Prices for holidays with children in August

The high cost of August holidays is predictable — everyone wants a holiday, and travel agents, hoteliers and airlines are taking advantage. Prices are rising even in the countries most often chosen for budget holidays; traditionally, expensive destinations remain expensive.

The picture is as follows if we look at the minimum cost of a 7-day package for one adult. The cheapest destinations are Bulgaria and Turkey, where a week's holiday costs between 470 and 580 euros. In Greece, Montenegro and Cyprus, you can get away for 540-680 euros. The price of a holiday in Croatia and Spain starts at 600 euros. You have to pay at least 750 euros for a rest in Malta.

The price of sightseeing tours around Europe is also not trivial. A one-week trip to Latvia or Hungary costs 450-570 euros, Denmark — 700 euros, Germany — 680 euros, Sweden — about 800 euros, and Norway — more than 900 euros.

Until the holiday season ends, you can only dream of a cheap holiday. But if you plan a winter or summer trip, you can cut costs by booking tickets and accommodation early or buying package holidays. The closer the season, the less choice and the higher the prices.

There are other ways to save. There are countries where it is cheaper to travel independently, such as Spain, Greece, Croatia and Montenegro.

Renting an apartment and visiting the cafes where the locals eat will cost less than staying in a hotel and eating in tourist spots.

On the contrary, buying a package that includes flights, transfers, accommodation, and meals is better for a cheap holiday in Turkey. If you are going to Europe, it makes sense to look into bus tours. The journey may not take much longer than a flight and can be much cheaper.

Where not to go

The geography of August is very simple: most of the countries for holidays with children are in Europe. The more distant resorts are shut down for a while because of the rains and typhoons.

So it is better not to go to Thailand, Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka, Hainan Island (China) in August because of the rainy season. Some resorts in the region do not experience heavy rain as often, but is it worth tempting fate?

As well as rain, the Caribbean is prone to hurricanes. A trip to Mexico, the Dominican Republic or Cuba should be postponed until late autumn.

Many tourists write reviews that the holiday season in Italy and Spain can mean that cafes and shops are closed (the owners go to the sea), hotels and beaches are complete, and prices rise sharply compared to July.

The unbearable heat and scorching sun are arguments against travelling to Egypt, the UAE, Israel or Jordan. Of the countries in this region, you can consider Tunisia or Morocco.

Tips for travelling with children

It can be summarised as long as the list of places to stay with a baby.

  1. All the seaside resorts are hot in August, and holidays with a small child should be postponed until autumn.
  2. To avoid the baby suffering from the heat, you can go to a European lake instead of the sea or choose a resort with a temperate climate.
  3. The best holidays for older children are summer camps. They are often located in holiday resorts, and parents have a holiday close to their almost independent child.
  4. If you want to take your children on trips in August, it is best to choose less popular destinations. Less touristy cities can be just as interesting as the ones everyone hears about.

The only problem at the end of the holiday is getting the kids back into the swing of things after the summer wilderness.
