Holidays in Spain in June: pros and cons

The beginning of summer is not the ideal time to travel to Spain, but it's close to it. Firstly, you've had enough cold weather and want to hit the beach. Secondly, there is no heat yet, and you can go on excursions or spend a carefree day at an amusement park. Thirdly, the most cautious are still waiting for the sea to warm up, so there are relatively few people in the resorts.

These are the main arguments why Spain in June is suitable for holidays with children:

  • the weather is warm and sunny in most resorts;
  • beaches are fully prepared for the season, inspected and awarded with the "blue flag";
  • the sea warms up so much during the month that even babies can swim in it;
  • water parks and amusement parks extend their opening hours;
  • you can access museums in the major cities without a queue.

However, some reviews about holidays in Spain in June are disappointing. Its main reason is the cold sea. Most often, the water can still be rather cool in early summer, and if you can't think of a holiday without swimming, plan your trip for the last decade of June.

Two more disadvantages of a June holiday are high hotel prices and a growing number of tourists daily.

You can save by booking accommodation in advance and avoid the influx of holidaymakers by choosing a small resort. In large cities, the crowds of holidaymakers can not be avoided; you will have to put up with it. But it's time to get down to specifics: where to holiday in Spain in June? To begin with  data on the weather.

The weather in Spain in June

The weather forecast for June and July in Spanish resorts pleases: it is warm and sunny day after day. Only July is more correct to call it hot, but the first month of summer is not yet tiring of heat. The weather in early June calls everyone to the beach. Let the sea is still cool, but the sun is already blazing, so it is not worth appearing on the shore without sunscreen and a hat.

By the middle of the month, sunbathers already want to dive into the sea. The water is less warm than in July and August, but you can swim. Going to Spain in June with a child, insure yourself and look for a hotel with a swimming pool.

The weather in Spain at the end of June is best indicated by the fact that the Spaniards open the bathing water season at this time. The sea becomes so warm that even cautious tourists enjoy diving into the water.

Air and water temperature

The Mediterranean climate of Spain has many expectations — long summers, early opening of the bathing season, and beach holidays until late autumn. The reality is a little less favourable.

Summer in Spanish resorts comes on the calendar, and the sea becomes warm not earlier than mid-June. For clarity, we have put together in a table the data on average air and water temperatures in different regions of Spain:

Destination Daytime Nightime Water
Madrid +29,1°С +18,4°С -
Barcelona +25,4°С +19,4°С +21,2°С
Valencia +28°С +20,1°С +22,6°С
Malaga +28,3°С +19,6°С +19,8°С
Mallorca +27,5°С +19,5°С +22,6°С
Tenerife +22,7°С +16,9°С +21,4°С

To the delight of those who have dreamed of beaches, you can sunbathe from the very first days of summer in Spain. There is no extreme heat, so the beach holidays will be safe. Unsummer-like low temperatures in Spain in June can be only in the Costa Brava resorts, where summer comes later, and in Tenerife, where the season starts closer to autumn.

In Madrid, Seville, Granada and other cities located far from the sea, on the contrary June is already scorching. From the very morning, the temperature can soar to +30°C, and neither clouds, rain, nor breeze will mitigate the heat.

Whether you can swim in the sea during your holiday depends on the weather and the temperature for swimming you consider acceptable for you. Usually, the water temperature in Spain in June does not exceed +22°C, and only closer to July can the sea warm up to +24°C. Many consider this temperature acceptable for swimming, although it is still a bit cold for long swims.

Beach holidays

All beaches in Spain have several similar characteristics: well-maintained, safe and free of charge. It is not without reason that hundreds of "blue flags" fly over the country's coastline every summer. This international award is given to beaches with everything you need for a comfortable holiday.

Many beaches are additionally marked with the Q sign, which means the highest level of service in Spain.

What is meant by service? First, it means perfect cleanliness of the shore and water, availability of changing cabins, toilets, showers, hire of sun loungers and sun umbrellas.

The beaches marked with the "Blue Flag" or the "Q" sign must have a lifeguard and medical service. The rest of the facilities (children's and sports grounds, seaside cafes and kiosks, water activities, active recreation centres) may vary.

The Blue Flag season in many Spanish resorts does not start until 1-15 June. Its start depends on the air and water temperature, respectively, and the readiness of people to sunbathe and swim. It is a small clue as to the best time for a beach holiday.

Where to stay in Spain in June?

Where to go in Spain in June to to get sunshine for sure? There are already many more options than in May.

Costa Dorada

On the Golden Coast of Spain in early June, the air warms up to +24°C — is this not what you need for a safe holiday at sea with a child? During the month, the day temperature stays within +24-30°C, night temperature — within +16-20°C. Days are sunny, and there are no more than two short rains for June.

However, the seawater remains invigorating until the middle of the month, about +20-21°C, and only closer to July warms up to +23-24°C. The average wind speed on the Costa Daurada resorts in June is 3.2 metres per second.

It is still possible to find a free place on the long beaches of this region in June. Salou and La Pineda town resorts are often chosen for holidays with kids, where the shallow sea warms up very quickly. Fans of active recreation prefer Cambrils: this resort has windsurfing and diving centres, as well as a sailing school.

Costa Blanca

June is a real summer in the resorts of the White Coast. Daytime temperatures range from +24°C to +30°C, while in the evenings, thermometers rarely show temperatures below +20°C. A cloudless sky, a slight breeze (up to 3.2 metres per second) and a warm sea complement the idyllic picture.

The swimming season in Costa Blanca opens in the first days of June when the sea water temperature reaches +22°C. In the last decade of June, the sea becomes even warmer, up to +24°C.

There is no need to be afraid of rain: meteorological data show that there may be one short rainfall in June on the Costa Blanca. Any beach on the Costa Blanca is suitable for family holidays. If you like spaciousness, opt for the coasts of Alicante and Benidorm. The beaches of Torrevieja are located in small bays.

Costa del Sol

On the southern coast of Spain, summer starts as early as May, and June brings the heat. With an average temperature of +28°C, thermometers often show +30-32°C. At night, it is also quite warm, around +18-20°C. The weather forecast promises neither gloomy nor rainy days: it is not without reason that this resort region is called "Sunny Beach". The wind is not to be feared either — it blows at a speed of 2.7 metres per second and is almost insensible.

Only the cool sea can spoil the impression. Due to cold currents, the water in the resorts of Costa del Sol, even in late June, is not warmer than +20-21°C. Costa del Sol has beaches to suit every taste: secluded and quiet, bursting with entertainment, oriented towards holidays with children. The shallowest and, therefore, warmest sea in June is on the coast of Torremolinos and Benalmadena.

Costa de Almeria

Costa de Almeria is a resort region close to Sunny Beach, but the climate is slightly milder. Daytime temperatures in June stay at +25-27°C, while nighttime temperatures drop to +17-20°C. Rainy and gloomy weather does not occur in summer, but windy weather is possible: the average wind speed reaches 4.3 metres per second.

The sea temperature varies yearly, but you should not expect very warm water — cold Atlantic currents can also be here. Often, all June sea temperature does not exceed +19-21°C, but if you are lucky, by the end of the month, the sea will warm up to +23-24°C. The best beaches for a holiday with a child are located in Roquetas de Mar and Mojacar. Their main advantage is children's playgrounds on the shore.

Mallorca

Summer on the largest of the Balearic Islands comes into its own from the very first days of June. The air temperature is usually within +25-30°C during the day and +15-20°C at night, the sun shines day after day (one short rain is not even paid attention), the wind blows at a speed of 3 m/s and mitigates the heat — the best conditions for a beach holiday and can not think of.

Most holidaymakers decide to swim in the sea only in the middle of June when the water warms up to +22-24°C. The most popular place of rest in June is the bay of Baia de Alcudia, where the sea warms up fastest. There are no fewer people on the long beach of Playa de Palma.

Tenerife

The weather on the island of eternal spring in June can be too spring-like, with air temperatures of +15-17°C and frowning skies. More often, to the delight of tourists, the air in Tenerife warms up to +20-25°C, although, at night, the temperature drops to +12-16°C. A week of cloudy days is possible during the whole month, and one short rain is also possible. With 4.9 metres per second wind speeds, it can be uncomfortable on the beach.

The sea temperature, almost regardless of the air temperature, stays at +20-21°C. If the weather is hot for a long time, the water can warm up to +22°C. The south coast of Tenerife is a succession of comfortable beaches. Playa la Pinta in Las Americas has inflatable water slides for children, Playa de Los Cristianos has children's playgrounds and Playa del Duque is considered the best beach in Tenerife.

If you want to learn windsurfing, we recommend El Medano Beach.

Tour Holidays

The sweltering Spanish summer has never stopped tourists from taking in the beauty. That's why there are so many travellers in Madrid, despite the noticeable heat — queues line up at the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Gallery and the Queen Sofia Art Centre. We recommend buying a Madrid Card, which can be used to bypass the queues, so that the kids don't have to wait in line.

There's no heat yet in Barcelona: take the chance to see Gaudi's famous creations — Sagrada Familia Cathedral, Parc Güell, Casa Batlló.

You'll also want to visit one of the museums — the maritime museum in the medieval shipyards, the Egyptian museum with mummies and sarcophagi, the FC Barcelona museum, or the wax museum. Curious children will love the interactive exhibits at the CosmoCaixa Centre and the Blau Natural Science Museum.

In Valencia, the heat won't stop you from spending time in the City of Arts and Sciences. All the Earth's seas splash under the roof of the Oceanographic Park, while the Prince Philip Science Museum makes physics and biology understandable and exciting.

испания в июне: 33 удовольствия photo 9

There's plenty to see in the resort towns, too. The Costa Blanca is home to the Salt Museum and the Micro-Gigantic Museum, where you must look at the exhibits through a magnifying glass. In Costa Dorada, you can see the ruins of the ancient settlement of Tarraco in the archaeological museum and learn about Gaudi's projects in the Museum of Reus.

While on holiday in the Costa del Sol and Costa de Almeria, it's worth getting out to Málaga to visit the Picasso Museum, the Museum of Art and Folk Traditions and the interactive Music Museum.

Mallorca is like a museum, so you can treat yourself to a sightseeing tour of the capital, Belver Castle, which houses a historical exhibition, and the Spanish Village, where replicas of Spain's most famous buildings line the streets.

Exotic Tenerife also has several museums, but we recommend a trip to the Guimar Pyramids to learn about the life of the indigenous people of the Canary Islands.

Family activities

June's not too hot weather still leaves a chance for outdoor entertainment, so you can go to the stunning amusement park PortAventura (Salou). In addition to the theme park, it includes the Caribe Aquatic Park and the Ferrari Land theme park.

испания в июне: 33 удовольствия photo 10

But while Port Aventura is easily accessible only from the Costa Daurada resorts, other resort regions can entertain just as well. For example, the Costa Blanca has its own amusement park Terra Mítica, several large water parks and the Terra Natura animal park. The Costa Dorada has Aquopolis and Aqualeon water parks with a full range of slides for adults and children. The Costa del Sol delights holidaymakers with the impressive Aqualand water park and the Selwo Aventura safari park.

Costa de Almeria's top attractions include the Parque Acuatico Mario Park water park and the Oasys MiniHollywood park in the Tabernas Desert, reminiscent of Wild West landscapes.

In Mallorca, it seems that there is no time to go to the beach: children will want to hang out at the Katmandu amusement park and Western Water Park, they will want to go to the show "The Adventures of Pirates", and they will also want to visit the Palma Aquarium and the Marineland dolphinarium, sail on a submarine excursion and take a trip on an ancient train from Palma to Soller.

And in Tenerife, the excellent Siam Park and Aqualand water parks set the tone for your holiday. You can add a little adventure to your holiday with a trip to Teide volcano or a walk through a eucalyptus forest.

Major cities have their own points of attraction. Madrid invites you to relax in the Casa de Campo Park, a zoo, water park and amusement rides, or the Faunia Nature Park.

The best family entertainment in Barcelona is concentrated on Montjuïc Hill, Mount Tibidabo and Citadel Park. An excellent holiday destination in Valencia is the Biopark, where animals feel at home.

Holidays, events and festivals

In the calendar of Spanish holidays, two June days are highlighted. Firstly, June is often the Day of the Body and Blood of Christ or Corpus Christi. On this feast, the clergy carry the Holy Gifts through the streets, followed by the townspeople. Carpets of fresh flowers are often laid out along the way, and houses are decorated with flags and garlands.

In the town of Castrillo de Murcia, the day is celebrated in its own way. Men in yellow and red costumes and masks in the town square jump over mattresses that lie... babies. The costumes symbolise the devil, and the jumping symbolises purification from spoilage and the evil eye. However, to see the ritual of El Colacho can only the most avid tourists, who are ready to go not to the seaside but inland.

Secondly, on the night of 24 June, the sky above Spain is lit up with fireworks — this is how they celebrate the night of St. Juan. It is also a festival of bonfires, in which everything bad (and at the same time unnecessary things) is burnt. In the central squares of towns and villages, tables with food are set up, and the inhabitants go out and have fun until the morning. St. Juan's Day is considered the opening of the bathing season: in most resorts, the sea has had time to warm up by this time.

In the resorts of Catalonia in the run-up to St. Juan's Night, the traditional sardana dance and the performance of Castellers — gymnasts who line up in human towers — can be seen.

Another event added to Spain's festivities in June is the bullfight. The biggest arenas, Madrid and Seville, usually host two or three bullfights.

Cost of vacation

The May preparation period before the tourist season is behind us, and prices in Spain skyrocket in June. The cost of the road is the least affected, and the most affected is the price of hotels and ready-made tours. The rise in prices also affects the catering sector.

Airfares

Despite the start of the beach season, airfares in June are almost the same as in May. In some places, the cost remains the same, and the possible increase in price is no more than 5-7%. The difference in the cost of flights to different airports in Spain is also insignificant. In July, airfares remain at the same level as in June.

Accommodations

With the arrival of summer, the demand for accommodation in Spain is growing, and with it, the prices are rising. Compared to May, the hotel room rates increase by 20-60%, and the maximum price rise falls on seaside resorts. In July, prices vary unevenly: in some resorts, rooms are more expensive by 10-13%, in others cheaper by 8-10%. In Madrid, on the contrary, in June hotel rates almost halve compared to May, and in July — twice as much as in June.

Package Tours

The beginning of the high tourist season affects the prices of tour packages. Compared to May, the cost of tours increases by 35-37%. Prices for short tours (up to 3 nights) rise by 23-25%. In July, the cost of ready-made tours continues to grow — the increase in price ranges from 13 to 30%.

Food

There is a wide range of prices for food in Spain: in big cities, especially in tourist restaurants, the prices are very high, while in smaller resorts, and even outside the tourist paths, lunch or dinner is moderately priced. For example, in an expensive restaurant, paella or fish dishes will cost at least €20-25, while in inexpensive places, you will serve a decent paella or seafood for €10. The breakfasts in Spain will cost a minimum of €8, and lunches and dinners — a minimum of €15-20 per person.

Many tourists in reviews of holidays in Spain in June write that they discovered tapas bars and charcuterie — there you can snack on sandwiches with cheese and jamon.

And what you can't deny yourself is fresh Spanish fruit. Mandarins, sold here almost all year round, cost less than €1.5 per 1 kg. Watermelons and melons, whose season is just beginning, are sold at €0.75 per 1 kg. The price of apricots, peaches, pears and strawberries starts at €2 per 1kg.

Shopping

Spanish shops do not organise sales in June, but tourists never leave the country without purchases. The main reason to go shopping is the pleasant prices of Spanish mass-market goods. Famous brands in Spain include Desigual, Zara, Mango and many others.

Clothing and footwear from lesser-known Spanish manufacturers are also noteworthy: they produce high-quality and inexpensive items here. Finally, it is hard to imagine a traveller who does not bring jamon, sausage, cheese or wine from Spain — these delicacies are bought despite no discounts.

Recommendations for holidays with children

The school holidays begin in June, and many parents take their children to Spanish resorts. The beginning of summer is a good time for a holiday; you must properly prepare for the trip.

  • The maximum of June luggage should be light clothes, including long sleeves thin clothing to protect from the sun. At the same time, you should take a sweatshirt, cardigan or windbreaker for cooler evenings.
  • Wherever you are going on holiday, be sure to use sunscreen. In June, SPF levels should be at least 25.
  • You will need a cap, panama or any comfortable hat for the beach or walking.
  • As the sea may not be warm enough yet, look for hotels with a swimming pool when looking for accommodation.
  • Even though some hotels offer children's animation and entertainment for kids, you should not count on such a scale as in Turkey.
  • If your goal is not lying on the beach and excursions, plan a trip to the beginning of June, when it's not too hot.
